This is unfortunate:

"Due to popular demand, devuan has now been removed from official Woof-CE,"

Does the french version run in english?
is it being updated?

After having found something that was usable Manjero OpenRC, I had to stop using it soon after, for lack of better terminology "they kicked them out of Manjero".

I dont think Artix is quite ready yet and is not meant for Newbs as i understood it.

MX-Linux is good but its not SystemD free as such and seems to depend on the processor speed as to how good it is either in 32-bit or 64-bit.

Personal anicdotes are that:
My systems seem to dislike SystemD that or its justs buggy as hell. (by the way i have tried to use -barring terminal- the lightest desktop enviroments available)

my systems might as well run bloated windows versions for all the good SystemD is.
-Slow to Load
-Sluggish to run
-Constant wifi dropouts (requires reboot to fix)

Hi cretsiah.

In answer to your questions,
-- to be clear, my version of Puduan is number 6, one version lower than
Sailor Enceladus', the one presented in this thread.

-- Puduan 6 comes with French locales for various programs, but they are
activated ONLY if you specify French as the system language at first boot.

Hello all.

It's unfortunate for us that Sailor E. has not been around for a long while. I did a trial run
of his latest build (654-something) , and this is a very polished distro.

The PPM, even 6 months later, worked like a charm, not even requiring an update.
Darren is right, Puduan-7 has been largely under-exposed in PuppyLand.

Pcmanfm is the default FM; those who like it will be well served OOTB.

I must say that It's a bit short on the configurations. But then, for some, that can be a
plus, since you will not have to undo someone else's choices to introduce yours.

Only caveat, for me anyway, was that it cannot boot from a Grub4Dos menu.lst. This
venerable grandpa of Linux boots does not recognize the compression format of
Puduan-7's initrd.gz.

I had to burn Puduan-7 to DVD to run it. It has Grub2 as loader, which looks great.
Again, we should see the positive in this: IMO, this can be the ideal "mobile" Puppy.
Puduan-7 on DVD plus a thumbdrive or a little flashcard for your pupsave and your
other personal files, would be a winning combination.

I encourage you to try it. Sailor E's repo at pcloud is still open. His most recent build is
in the B3 folder there.

And since Devuan is on the rise, you'll be trendy using this Pup!

Hi Musher,

I have just tried Sailors latest effort and managed to get it booting with grub4dos by manual editing menu.1st
here is my entry (remembering this the directory I put it in).

title Puppy puduan 7b (sda1/pud7)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /pud7/vmlinuz psubdir=pud7 pmedia=atahd pfix=fsck
initrd /pud7/initrd.gz
You are indeed right pcmanfm is the default file manager. Rox pin to have shortcuts on desktop isn't work thus far I play around and get this to function.

Connects fine. Fire wall doesn't show in tray so will look at that but seems to be working. Will have to play some more.

Anyway thats me for awhile see you guys later.

At the moment until I solve pinboard problem I have had to put a script in start up folder to turn pinboard on not even using an xinitrc from another stable puppy solved the problem.

Anyway like connects to net sound and video working.

Hello all.

I get an "error 13" message when trying to load Puduan-7 from shinobar's grub4dos,
saying that its initrd.gz file is compressed in a non-compatible format.

I suppose Puduan's-7 initrd needs to be compressed another way. Does anybody
know about this error 13 thing? (I don't.) Any pointers to a solution will be much
appreciated. TIA.

I believe that it is important that the boot loader created by one Puppy allow any
other Puppy to be loaded with it too. Who knows? Implementing this single compat-
ibility feature may win us a few points on the DistroWatch chart or at least stop the
drop. ( ;) to forum member oui and to him only!)

I'd guess the vmlinuz wasn't built with .gz initrd support.

Simple answer might be to just gzip -d initrd.gz and change your bootloader to point to that initrd instead of pointing to initrd.gz

Hi, rufwoof, bigpup.

No rufwoof, I tried unpacking initrd.gz to initrd as you suggested and rebooted Sailor
E's. Puduan-7, but the problem was still there. Since the error mentions a problem
with "executable", I checked the exec property, and it was on.

Bigpup's research is spot on. Except partition sda1 (an ext4 partition) does not have
the 64 bit set. (I followed jd754's procedures.) I'll try to see more of this tomorrow,
from Puduan-7, it can boot from CD.

Thanks guys, and BFN.

Hello darry and all.

If you or anyone is interested in woofing Puduan-7 again, or librePup for that matter,
I have found the wood-CE_Testing that I used for woofing my xenialPup. This woof
covered quite a range of distros, as you can see:

Code: Select all

You'll find this not-so-old woof-CE archive at augras' Puppy repo.

To unpack it, you'll need to first use lzip, and then the usual unzip, like so:

Code: Select all

lzip -d -k woof-CE-testing.zip.lz
unzip woof-CE-testing.zip
Lzip should be available through your PPM. If not, you can download its source from
the official site and compile it. Or leave me a note, I'll send you a binary copy.

IHTH some creative Puppyists.

Have a great day, everyone!

Hi musher0, strange... for me puduan boots fine with grub4dos (grldr and menu.lst on sda1).
I extracted the ISO from first post in "puduan" directory on my sda7 partition (32 bit) and use menu.lst entry:

Code: Select all

title Puduan 7.0.0a1
  root (hd0,6)
  kernel /puduan/vmlinuz pmedia=ataflash psubdir=puduan pfix=fsck
  initrd /puduan/initrd.gz

If that older woof-CE was ever pushed to official woof-CE github then you can get it from there directly by going back in the history and browsing at that point (which allows you to download/clone that earlier stage in woof-CE history directly from woof-CE github):

https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... 1fc50e7907

Note that it is possible, however, that the augras copy you mention may have other changes in it of course that were never pushed up to official github. I wouldn't know without doing a diff.

Hello, wiak.

Aren't woof-CE versions identified by numbers? It should easy to tell.
Edit, Tuesday, March 26 2019, 05 h 20 --
The woof-CE recipe that I made available at augras' Puppy repo produces
a Puduan-7.0.0a2-2.
End of edit --

But you can do a diff if you so wish, I did not tamper with it. I would not know how
anyway, if that may reassure you.

In fact I am glad that someone from woof-CE has put back in circulation a woof-CE
with which interested users can build a Devuan-derived Puppy.

Those interested users now have a choice of two "wooves" with which to build a
Devuan Pup, whereas only yesterday, they had a choice of zero. (Please see the post
at the top of this page.)

Perhaps they will not be as up-to-date as the rest, but they can still be remastered, no?
Plus the Puduan "wooves" can be updated as time goes on.

Also, having a choice of not only Puduan possibilities, but of many Puppy builds, IMO,
is closer to the original Puppy spirit, don't you think?

In view of Devuan's rise, I think it was, not necessarily an error, but an ill-inspired
move, shall we say, on the part of the woof-CE group to remove the Devuan possibility.
But sixteen months or so ago, nobody could say for sure. So the decision you took
then is understandable.

The sad thing, though, is that your decision pulled the rug from underneath Sailor
Enceladus' feet. Not good for motivation -- or for solidarity --, if I may say so.

Best regards.

Hello all.

This is what I came up with using the 700a22 woof-CE recipe that I shared
above. There were no glitches at all during construction, it went very
smoothly.

It has a choice of two kernels in the Grub2 menu. All is working well at this
time.

Continuing tests.

(Edit, 2019-04-05 :
I have uploaded a 2nd build of gnumeric-1.12.32 to augras' Puppy
repository. Explanation
here.
End of edit)

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello all.
Gnumeric-1.12.32-1 is now available for Puduan-7 here.
Packaged from essentially *.deb files. Although the libglasem library is from
the Sysiphus repo, and the main goffice lib, from a Fedora repo. I got the
build packages from the pkgs.org site, and they offered the add'l rpm's.
I apologize to the purists. However, according to the authors of the < alien >
Debian utility documentation, since those libs are not system files, it should
not matter. I tested this build of gnumeric a couple of times, and it seems
to work fine. If you encounter any bugs, please report them below.
You need to download only the main file, marked simply "gnumeric". Some
of you may also need the locales file. The doc pet archive is available for
the more curious minds.
Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTES
-- The PPM is half-sick on this Puduan-7. I have to find a cure for it. In the
meantime, the pkgs.org site is my "savior".

-- The Debian utility called "alien" does import | export between Linux distro
archives. E.g. : *.deb to *.rpm, and vice versa. Reference

Hello all.

Please find attached the procps utilities in (partial?) replacement of the
busybox ones. These are current.. I downloaded the source from gitlab
this afternoon, and compiled it.

This pet package provides:
free
kill
pgrep
pidof
pkill
pmap
ps
pwdx
skill
slabtop
snice
tload
top
uptime
vmstat
w
watch
The add'l libtool library was needed to compile this package. It was not in
Puduan-7's "b3" devx. I got it from pkgs.org, in the DebianStretch repo.

As per forum rules, you will have to reconstitute the pet file from the two
attached parts, since it is too large as a single forum attachment. To do
so, go in your downloads directory and type, in console:

Code: Select all

cat xa*.pet > procps-mstr20190401.pet
Then you will be able to install that file as usual.

I did notice that the < free > utility and the < top > utility had been
substantially "improved". The changes are not simply bug-fixes (although
those are indeed important) or cosmetic changes. In particular, the
< free > utility now.allows the user a finer-grained view of occupied RAM.

Please be warned that installing the attached pet archive will replace any
busybox trimmed-down version of the same provided ex-factory, and
probably add a couple of utilities your Puppy did not have (depending on
the Pup). Use at your own risk, as usual with GPL licences.

The tree of this pet archive is attached.

With a view of building better Puppies.

Hello again, people.

Less 550 attached. Ex-factory woof-CE is providing less v. 481 for this
Puduan-7. Do I need to say more? The list of bug fixes, changes and
improvements from 69 versions ago is, shall we say, endless.

Compiled from the latest source, obtained today from
Greenwoods Sortware.

Do not forget to install the lesspipe complement to less. I'm not including
it because lesspipe does not need compiling per se. (If you cannot find it,
please ask below.)

Hello all.

Please find a compilation of conky-1.11.4_pre_190404, the latest as of
this writing, at http://augras.eu/puppy_linux/?dir=mushe ... -7.0.0a2-2.

Please be aware that these new versions of conky are Lua-based. Some
of your previous conky configurations will work, while others will have to
be translated to conky's new configuration format.

~~~~~~~~~
Also, I have just now uploaded in that ftp folder a corrected version of
gnumeric-1-12.32. This new build is about 800Kb larger than the previous
one.
I noticed that the previous Debian build refused to load "older" gnumeric
formats, as I understand it. I've upgraded goffice to v. 0.10.44 from v.
0.10.42, and replaced the Debian-built gnumeric with the one I had
compiled for DPupBuster last month. Everything now seems to have
fallen into place nicely, AFAICT. But please report any oddities. TIA.
Hello again all.
The libav media suite v. 12.3 now available at augras' PuppyLinux repo,
both as a pet archive and as an sfs.
Ffplay, the media player that comes with ffmpeg ex-factory, played music
files ok, but started segfaulting on movies and videos. I checked for file
fragmentation, and upgraded that partition from ext3 to ext4, but it wasn't
any of those things.
I chanced a switch to the most recent v. of libav, and it worked. Avplay
can play both.
Compiled on and for this Puduan-700a22. May not work on other Pups with
glibc-2.24, and will very probably not work on Pups that have a glibc library
below that version number.
BTW, libav is simpler to compile, and to configure in scripts, than its
ffmpeg cousin. The sound and the visuals are as good, as far as I can tell.
Enjoy.
Hello again, all.
I had to introduce a couple of lines in BK's AppRun script for
/usr/local/apps/Xlock/. Starting at line 153, to the end, like so:
Code: Select all
#100608 lobster: disable ctrl-alt-backspace by disabling ctrl key...
# xmodmap -e 'keycode 37='
# xmodmap -e 'keycode 109='
[ "`pgrep xcompmgr`" ] && killall -q xcompmgr # musher0, 2019/04/06
if [ ! -f $HOME/.xlockrc ];then
 XLOCKPARAMS="`cat $HOME/.config/Xlock/xlockscreenparams`"
 rxvt -g 36x1 -title "Create key (password)" -e xlock $XLOCKPARAMS
else
 xlock `cat $HOME/.config/Xlock/xlockscreenparams`
fi
Appli=/opt/local/bin/xcompmgr.sh;[ -f $Appli ] && $Appli # musher0, 2019/04/06
#100608 lobster: restore...
# xmodmap -e 'keycode 37=Control_L'
# xmodmap -e 'keycode 109=Control_R'
###end###
Xlock and xcompmgr can't stand each other, it seems. Trying to run the
screen lock with xcompgmr on froze this Puduan-7 completely. A manual
reboot was required.
I'm not including the xcompmgr script because the parms are unimportant.
It's xcompmgr that's incompatible with xlock, not its parms.
I haven't got compton on this Pup. Maybe someone will wish to test if the
same bug exists when compton is running.
As to why I commented out lobster's xmodmap lines: when I got back
from the screen lock, the keyboard's control keys were disabled in ROX
and geany. With the xmodmap lines commented out, they remain
functional.
Complete edited script attached.
IHTH someone.
