This might be intel/amd specific (ability to use ctrl-alt-Fn to flip between virtual terminals), with that in mind ...

Boot easyOS to the standard desktop and instead of starting the easy container via the desktop icon, open a xterm window and run

X  :1 vt07

which basically says start another X session using DISPLAY :1 (as DISPLAY :0 will already be being used by the main desktop), starting up that X session on vt07 (ctrl-alt-F7)

Minimise that window (you may have to ctrl-alt-F4 back to the main desktop), as the X command wont return and we can later use Ctrl-C in that window to end the X session.

Open another xterm window and run
Code:
DISPLAY=:1 empty -f ec-chroot easy

which starts the easy container on that DISPLAY :1 (using the normal Xephyr and pflask containment that the easy container is pre-set to use). That xterm window can be closed as once the container is running it continues running in the background.

Now you'll have the standard desktop running on ctrl-alt-F4 and the easy container running on ctrl-alt-F7 (flip between them as desired).

To close the easy container go to the xterm window in the main session and Ctrl-C

Try running "dmesg" in a terminal, see if it reports unable to load firmware.

I am still working on the Rock64 board. Had many issues with compiling the kernel, and getting Easy to boot.

I am hoping to create a skeleton SD-card image that will boot on any Rockchip-based board, and will just have to add latest 'Image' (kernel) and easy.sfs

This arrangement has 'initrd' inside the kernel, and an external BOOT_SPECS file.

Right now, recompiling the kernel, for the umpteenth time. Had issues with aufs compile fail, now fixed.

This is the 4.4.154 kernel, with special patches for the Rockchips. This is the kernel version supported by the Rockchip manufacturer. Upstream kernels do not work so well.

Lacking in expertise, I only partly can follow your post's reasoning, yet the following question which I already tried to put up for discussion previously might relate to rufwoof's current problems:

Where am I after flipping back via pressing the ALT-F6 combination in any container?

Well, I'm back in the main desktop, but - as a consequence of the ALT-F6 command - a container-icon unavoidably now is present in the menu/applet icon tray at the bottom of the screen, and clicking on it, immediately brings me back into the container which I actually wanted to leave. All container-specific settings use to 'survive' this procedure.

As far as I can see (or suppose), the container is not left in fact, unless its icon in the applet tray is eliminated via the kill or close command (right mouse button click). Restarting the container after this operation brings me back to a 'pristine' (?) container desktop which got rid of all previous settings.

Am I misconceiving the function of the ALT-F6 flip command?
What about container isolation and security when its icon persists (is still present) in the applet tray?

For the 'Easy' container you're spot on lp-dolittle. That is the way it is intended to work. The Easy container desktop is in practice just another window, that is set to be full screen, so it looks like a complete desktop (but is just another window).

Alt-F6 is defined to minimise window, so that full-screen'd Easy desktop reduces down to a tray item when Alt-F6 is pressed. There is no Exit option contained within the Easy 'desktop' so you have to right mouse and 'close' its tray item in order to close it down.

The benefit is that X is weak and windows sharing the same X server can relatively easily see/do things in the other windows. So for instance if one window was running a browser and another a root terminal then if the browser had a flaw (common), a remote hacker could conceivably gain command line access to the window running the browser, and then gain access to the window running a root terminal (root command line) ... and do anything from there. What Easy does is in effect block that, the Easy Container window is contained (restricted in what it can do/see of other windows (and the system)). A remote hacker could gain access to root inside the container, but that root is heavily restricted - in effect no different to a heavily restricted normal userid.

The Easy window fundamentally uses Xephyr and pflask to set that all up. Other containers such as the seamonkey and console containers don't use Xephyr, but xorg instead and as such are much weaker in security. For example open a console in the main desktop, and then click the console container desktop item to open another console window. Run xwininfo inside the container console window and then mouse click the main windows console window and it reports back with its windowid ...etc. As a simple example that container console window could for instance use xdotool to activate and send key sequences to the main console. In short the www and console containers have weak levels of containment, that are relatively easily broken out of. The Easy container in contrast is much more difficult to break out of.

Typically a hacker, as just one method/example, needs to gain access to local space that can be written to and/or executed, could be memory, cache, swap or just normal disk area. They then need to get the system to redirect to that, so they might spray the heap, use buffer overflows, or actions that aren't usually expected to occur in a manner that gets the stack pointer to redirect to their code (the cache/swap/disk area mentioned earlier). Often programs are written relatively poorly and contain bugs. A security bug is the same as any other bug, but is one that enables security to be breached. Browsers are a prime target because they relatively easily enable a hacker to get their code into the local system, could be part of a image for example. If additionally its known that a particular browser/version has a bug where if x and y is done then it does something it was not really intended to do, then along with sending that image or whatever to the local system, they'll trigger that action, and they're in. Once in, it can be relatively easy to privilege elevate to root level, at which point the system is pwned. With the Easy container, its much more difficult to get from the initial breach to becoming (real) root - your system is much less likely to become pwned.

Many don't care. Perhaps considering that they've nothing of importance on their system or whatever. However even apparently trivial local data might provide a more complete picture for someone that wishes to steal your identity (which can lead to decades of court cases where you attempt to fend off claims that purchases or borrowings were not made by you); Or if your system becomes part of a bot net that might be used to attack systems; Or download illegal content such that the police knock your door as being the primary suspect. Some of those those that end up in such positions do subsequently deeply regret that they previously didn't care, as such a position can be significantly life changing.

I still have to ponder on the question of whether using the main desktop, after flipping back from the restricted container desktop via ALT-F6, involves a security risk until the restricted container desktop is killed or closed. I'm also not really sure about these two options' differing effect, in that particular situation)

.. so looks like its not a driver issue after all. Perhaps a bad burn of the usb image, or even a partially faulty usb ??

Xephyr and pflask seem good enough that you could run windows in the main desktop while the Easy container is running. But to be more certain it would be good practice to avoid doing so.

I only use the main desktop for admin tasks, running those whilst the Easy container isn't running. With all main desktop windows closed I'll then start the Easy container and use that for general use (browsing, office, music etc.). Periodically however I will alt-f6 back to the main session and use perhaps rox to copy files between the two 'desktops' (main session and Easy container) but avoid leaving a main desktop window open any longer than necessary to do that and mindful that it 'could' be a security risk (so tend to have the Easy container browser on my home page and with its cache having been cleared (I tend to ctrl-shift-delete regularly i.e. after exiting from a online logged in session and before logging into another). Alternatively, and the method I personally more prefer, is ctrl-alt-F2 and login as root and use mc to transfer files i.e. from the command line, and use that to copy files - but many dislike/prefer-to-avoid cli.

More generally I suspect you could leave root windows running in the main session whilst the Easy container is running and be secure. I haven't found a way to break out of the Xephyr Easy container and access main session windows, so my practice is more of belt and braces rather than being considered as advisable.

For the www and console containers however I have been able to break out of the contained www/console to the main root windows, so I'd say inadvisable to have root windows running on the main desktop when either the www or console containers were running. Personally I don't use them myself at all. The Xephyr Easy container meets all my needs.

Security is a tradeoff. A pc that is never turned on and is locked in a vault still isn't 100% secure. Generally as ease of use/functionality increases so security tends to decrease. Really the best you can do is to raise the security bar high enough such that you're less of a easy/attractive target than others without excessively compromising functionality. Easy does that (very) well. As ever however security is fundamentally a practice, not a product.

rufwwof, thank you alot for your efforts, my image burned correctly I'm pretty sure of that with hecksum and other tools, the same mdsl modem detected correctly without any problems in xenialpup 7.5, I think its somthing wrong in usb-modeswitch 2.5.2 because in xenialpup 7.5 usb-modeswitch 2.2.0 the modem been dtected without any prolem, and I'm not trying to run openbox wm as far as I know, I'm not sure.

Opening a console in the Easy container and running

Currently I'm trialing just having either the main or Easy container running at any one time. Boot to cli (qfix=nox boot parameter) and run xwin to start the normal session. Use the exit to commandline menu option to end that session.

For the easy container, from ctrl-alt-F1 (cli) run

and note the PID ($! return code)

... to start the easy container (also runs on ctrl-alt-F4 - the same as when the main session is run).

When done, in the easy container run killall ROX-Filer and back at ctrl-alt-F1 kill the X PID noted earlier (i.e. kill -9 12345 ... assuming 12345 PID).

During a easy container session you can ctrl-alt-F1 to the cli (real/full root) and copy files across or whatever (I like to install mc from petget and use that as a file manager and mc -e text editor).

More cumbersome to run things that way, but not having both the main X and container X running at the same time provides greater separation.

Personally I mostly just use the easy container anyway. Only using the main X for admin purposes, which once things are set up tends to be relatively infrequent. For mounting and other common admin tasks, they can be performed from cli (I also like to install tmux and use a tput based menu for those sorts of things).

My intent is to standardise both to being similar, xwin for main session, ecwin for the easy container, along with adding a exit choice to the containers menu so that I don't have to manually run the kill ROX-Filer, kill X, flip to ctrl-alt-F1 tasks manually.

The system definitely seems quicker when just running one X compared to two, temperature wise however seems much the same. 40 degrees (40000 millidegrees) on mine for the easy container when loaded with glxgears, audacious showing Spectrum Analysis and a full screen youtube (one of sneekylinux's) running in Firefox Quantum.

/usr/sbin/set_bg inside the Easy container needs to also copy the new background image to /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg

I just added
Code:
cp $1 /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg

at the end of set_bg

After the easy container is shutdown, whilst it has the new background image set in the Rox pinboard, the next time its started that to rox pinboard's background image pointer reverts to pointing to /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg, so prior changed backgrounds are lost - unless that default.jpg image is also updated. Changing set_bg as above rectifies that so if you change the background in the easy container the previously changed background persists.
