Easy Linux

#61 Post by lp-dolittle »

Sorry don570 for this unintentional linguistic flaw!

What I wanted to say was: thank you for still SHOWING interest in my issue!!

I meanwhile installed Easy Linux on a usb3-stick. Easy Linux so far successfully boots on the desktop-PC as well as on the laptop, yet keyboard-layout settings on the laptop still are a source of problems!

Strange!! As shown in the attachment, no xorg.conf file seems to exist in the q.sfs/etc/X11 folder .... neither after the initial installation nor later, after running several setup options!!

Note to lp-dolittle:

I hope that Barryk is reading this. This is the type of bug that he
can fix.

What I would try to do now is launch the first run window -->
where you select your keyboard, clock type, time zone etc.

Clicking on the 'Setup' icon on the desktop might launch it???
Clicking in the video section might create an new xorg.conf file

@ don570

trying to understand why no xorg.conf file seems to exist in the q.sfs/etc/X11 folder, I did a search with pFind, and found the file listed in the X11 folder!?
As shown in the attachment, rox-filer and pFind do not agree!! The xorg.conf file also does not appear after klicking the rox-filer 'show/hide files' button

strange!

or change the keyboard from english to swedish ---> that is supposed
to make changes in xorg.conf

from BarryK
http://barryk.org/easy/how-easy-works.htm
q.sfs
This is an approximately 380MB file that contains all of Easy Linux. It is the entire filesystem, which basically means that it has all of the applications, utilities, data and documentation. It packs a lot into a small space -- for example, Easy includes the SeaMonkey browser suite (based on Firefox, but also has WYSIWYG HTML editor, chat, addressbook, mail & newsgroups), and the Libreoffice suite. It also includes drivers for most hardware, such as network, printing, scanning, cameras.
The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf will never be in that q.sfs package!!!

since xorg.conf is generated from scratch at first boot .

You could type in terminal

Code: Select all

geany  /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or if you have booted up without a GUI

Code: Select all

vi -R /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Sorry don570, our messages obviously crossed.

according to my up to now experience, re-running the first-run setup did not help resolve my problems. As for the keyboard-layout, the first-run settings and the settings performed after launching the setup-button do not really correlate.

unfortunately, I continue bothering you

thanks for your patience!!

Interesting exchanges. Just a few considerations:
- BK is a retired gentleman following his personal interests, presently focussed elsewhere
- Easy Linux was announced as a pre-alpha, for interest. This is one for the loyal, not to say talented IT troops.
- For all others, 'Easy' may be a misnomer. Only one other correspondent, apart from YT, was brave enough to report a failed attempt to tangle with the instructions, the great unwashed represent the silent majority. As an aged, scientist with decades of experience in publishing, editing and writing, I was unable to follow them, because, I suspect, I am not in the inner core. Not being qualified to criticise our Dear Leader in his professional field, I would only say that the choice of title could be misleading to the masses.
- Best policy? Wait until we see the outcome of BK's present pre-occupations (cf. blog).

Thank you, Sage, for your comment!

I think I understood the message. Aware of my inability to specifically contribute to the development of Easy Linux, I will switch back from posting to reading! However, having caused a not yet finished discussion, I will try to precisely document my keyboard-layout/Xorg(?) problem, and present the result in the form of another post.

sorry for having interfered!

No apology needed - I am, like many, too anxious to try out every little thing but am utterly devoid of any expertise (perhaps lack of interest would be more exact) in coding despite being a computer user for 53yrs. (yes, long before most folks could spell it). Managed to write a load of 8bit assembler with the kids back in the '80s but it bored me to the proverbial. Since then have been grateful for the crumbs handed down by the professionals, glad when it fits with my needs as a user. Expectations often exceed deliverables!

Blender 2.76 will work in Easy. Newer versions won't because of OpenGL 2.1 requirements.

I decompress in /opt

Yes! Rox would be a much better file manager.

If Nexus 5 and 7 has 2 GB of memory then q.sfs will load in RAM
for extra speed.

There appears to be a bug in Easy Linux.

When I uncompress portable apps in /opt
I want to launch them from the start menu, but I find that I can not.
They don't show in start menu.
:cry:

I assume that the installer app is making a list somewhere,
and if the installer app isn't used then the start menu isn't updated.

Here's an example of a desktop file that won't update the start menu.

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
#Encoding=UTF-8 #Encoding causes problems
Name=RedNotebook
GenericName=Journal
Comment=Daily journal with calendar, templates and keyword searching
Exec=/opt/rednotebook-1.14/rednotebookx
Icon=rednotebook.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=X-Personal-organizer
StartupNotify=true

Red notebook

#77 Post by don570 »

Good news :lol:

I could make Red notebook portable journal work in Easy linux

Instructions:
There are two pet packages that need to be installed.
I got them from RU xerus

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 564#930564

The installation is in /opt .
After the install an icon will appear on desktop.

Just what I've been looking for Don. Thanks for highlighting RedNotebook, until you posted I didn't even know of its existence. Just installed it from the Debian repo and it feels 'just right' (version 1.8.1, copyrighted 2008-2012, so a older version, but seems to work well enough for my needs).

I had been using osmo but never really got on that well with it. Then I moved over to Evolution ... but that's more heavyweight than what I need (caters for mail etc. ... which I do online). Rednotebook as a calender ... great/ideal for me. I now have it set so when I click the date/time in the panel - up it pops. :lol: 8) Thanks again.

To Rufwoof...

Can you use the start menu when you use a repository?

Thanks for identifying some issues, guys.

This post is advance notice, I am coming back to working on Easy Linux.

One problem identified was how to specify extra sfs file to load, either in the main filesystem or in containers.

I propose to greatly simplify that. No need to make entries in the "configuration" files. Will post details later.
