Puppy deleted files from Dropbox?

#1 Post by laanan »

Hello,

So, it appears that 3000 + files were deleted from my Dropbox account shortly after connecting Puppy to it. I did not knowingly delete them.

This occured back in April 2017, and I just have not noticed until now (June 2017). I am still investigating the details (the event log from Dropbox just shows that my user account did the deleting, but not which device).

If the files were deleted off of my box running Puppy, is there a place they would be stored? I looked in the trash folder, which is empty...Would there be a log or evidence of some kind of them being deleted?

Any ideas as to...

1) Where my deleted files might be
2) How the heck this happened (I did not manually delete these files)

...would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you very much.

They do say that if you store files on removable media that there is some risk of "data loss". I haven't had a problem with this. One good thing about dropbox is that you can restore older versions of files and recover deleted files. If this is a big concern for you you can consider upgrading the account to have dropbox store old and deleted files longer. Alternatively you could come up with your own archiving system.

Not knowing exactly what caused the issue, I can suggest upgrading dropbox. I've gotten the deb versions of dropbox to work on both tahrpup and on fatdog64.

A Google search brings up several reasons this could happen.
Seems the sync feature is the biggest reason.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Makes sense about sync being part of the problem, but, if the deletion occurred on my puppy system, would they possibly still be on the drive somewhere, other than the trash bin?

In Puppy.
Delete does just that, it deletes.

Dragging something to the trash icon, on the desktop, puts it in trash.
It does not delete it until you delete from trash.
In trash you can recover it back to the normal location.

May be able to recover deleted stuff using this program.
Must use it before you write anything new to storage device.
The write process will use the space the deleted stuff was using, so it will really be gone.
Delete usually just deletes all the info about the data and makes the location available for writing. It is not totally gone untile something writes in that space.
