Why do you think that?
Or Xorg? Do you have a graphic card? There is something with intel gc:

Have you seen others report this problem? I haven't found any so far.

Your setup to boot looks okay btw.

I read:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 419#978419

There was a bug in jwm when these builds were published. I'm using jwm 2.3.5 from xenialpup64 and until now the shutdown is ok.

That's the same reference as mine! I thought freezes occurred anytime in this case.

I haven't used the slackos of micko much. I found them not very solid (I expect stability from slacko! ;-) )
I use the more recent builds from Sailor (64bits) and norgo (32bits) from april. They should have a lot more fixes from woof CE.

I have intel graphic card. My problem seems to be fixed by choosing modesetting in xorgwizard.

grandmother running linux?

#442 Post by clerk_gabel »

A friend of mine is a volunteer and help a lot of senior citizens in our community if they get into computer troubles. He say due to the large screen many older people use laptops, where forgotten passwords next to lost wi-fi are major concerns. From his knowledge web-mail (~ Gmail) and browser based communication with health providers, tax authorities, social security, online banks and digital mailboxes, together with reading online newspapers, Facebook and watching streamed media are the common use of the laptops. Looking at stored photos taken with cameras and mobile phones also is popular.

With this in mind I made a full install of Slacko 700 RC3 K4.4.70-PAE 2018-08-19 on a former Vista Toshiba Satellite dual core laptop.

I found:

1) connecting to wi-fi a breeze
2) with puplet CamPhoneTab-1.6 + libgcrypt11 installed mounting two different mobile phones was uncomplicated and made it easy to drag and drop folders from phone to storage (a primary partition defined at setup).
3) Firefox 52 OK, GetFlash OK, Image viewer, YouTube / Gmail etc. OK
3) however, if iso burned to CD no boot ("Cannot find slacko_6_9_9_9.sfs" error), had to install via USB.The Puppy Package manager did not connect to repositories, package manager not reckognising rpm's, Firefox Quantum and Seamonkey will not run, even with gtk+ 3-3.4.4 installed (via package manager).

Pup-SysInfo reported: Linux Kernel: 4.4.70 (i686) meltdown: No kernel mitigation spectre_v1: No kernel mitigation spectre_v2: No kernel mitigation.

Info just to maintainers, if any exist.

@clerk_gabel thank you for feedback
clerk_gabel wrote:...if iso burned to CD no boot ("Cannot find slacko_6_9_9_9.sfs" error), had to install via USB.
could you explain a little bit more exactly please.

Did you get this message from installer ?
What's the name of this SFS at your burned CD.
Should be puppy_slacko_6.9.9.9.sfs
is this correct in your case ? ( or did you burn your cd with option "replace dots by underscores") :-)
clerk_gabel wrote:...The Puppy Package manager did not connect to repositories, package manager not reckognising rpm's, Firefox Quantum and Seamonkey will not run, even with gtk+ 3-3.4.4 installed (via package manager).
PPM is okay, maybe something with mimetypes
temporary workaround for installation of RPM's please use commandline

Code: Select all

petget +mypackage.rpm
PPM offered version of Seamonkey works without problems
required dependencies: seamonkey-solibs-2.49.4, at-spi2-atk-2.18.x, at-spi-core-2.18.x, ,gtk+3-3.18.x

Hi Norgo - you are of course right, the faulty boot message was as you mention "could not find puppy_slacko_6.9.9.9.sfs". Similar messages are plenty when attempting to boot Puppy distributions from CD, where the same CD will work on one computer while not on another, I have found.
I found a workaround for "the retired persons" Linux and made a small tutorial for a setup, you could take a look here

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=114268

It is a fine thing if you proceed in efforts to maintain Slacko. Myself I will stick to test the workaround (where I'm quite sure PupSysInfo2.8 in some way leak memory / interfere with other applications). Have a nice day!

Which are 32bit?

#447 Post by arby »

Greetings Gents,

I'd like a jumpdrive install, compatible with both 64 and older
32 bit machines. I can't quite tell from the names which are 32.

I look at things like http://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linux_Slacko
and see a huge array of files, nothing really clarifies it for me.

Is slacko-700-RC3_k4.4.70-PAE_2018-08-19.iso a 32 bit version?

Is Slacko 7 still being developed?

Thanks for any info.

As a general rule, if there is no "64" in the name it is 32bit. I agree it is not always clear and easy to know.
You can look up the thread (often the first post) about the build you are interested in, or look for an installation report from Billtoo or someone else.
You can often find info on the numerous iso's on archive.org on this forum. Try to google them.
On archive.org the collection of Puppy is quite impressive. There is a more official repo on ibiblio.
Is Slacko 7 still being developed?
Good question. I hope it is. In the ibiblio repo for Puppy there is a slacko7 testing iso, but it is a year old.
At the moment to get the best Slacko, you could look on the thread for woof-CE ("woof-CE needs you") or on this thread for the most recent build offered.
Norgo and Sailor have offered some builds lately.
Then at least the latest improvements from woof-CE are included into your Slacko.

It seems 01micko has stopped working on this Slacko version.
So, someone else is going to have to take over and keep it going to final release.

Is that going to be norgo???

If yes, you need to start a new topic about your build of Slacko, so you can have control of the first post!

You can assume that a Puppy version that does not have 64 in the name is a 32bit.

Example:
Slacko 6.9.9.9 (32 bit)
Slacko64 6.9.9.9 (64 bit)
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

That is a good suggestion, bigpup.
On my dual core desktop I have a slacko from norgo as my main worker for several months now. It's as good as any release.

It's not that nothing is made with slackware in Puppyland.
There is LxPupSc and xslacko-slim that are constantly evolving and updated.
James from Fatdog (almost slacko ;-) ) is announcing "the base of the next generation Fatdog64 800" on his lightofdawn blog.
in the meantime Patrick Volkerding is working on Slackware 15.0 in spite of his financial headaches.

I downloaded and installed the slacko64-6.9.9.9-uefi-k3.16-PM-LO.iso.
After installing favorite applications some (kodi, vlc) wouldn't run.
I changed the kernel to the newest 4.4.159 and it works much better.

System: Host: puppypc32401 Kernel: 4.4.159 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: JWM 2.3.2 Distro: Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9

Info: Processes: 181 Uptime: 11 min Memory: 245.4/11905.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8

I did all the Update Notices - Slackware Bugfixes.
Updated Palemoon to the latest version, added Firefox 60.2.2esr which was one of the Update Notices.
Added the newest pulse audio from BLFS and sound works in Firefox, not sure if pulse or the dependency
listed as a must have fixed sound.

It's working well,
I like it :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: I cleaned up "the look" of one of my clones of this install
that runs on another HP desktop.

Great fun :)

I tried another Slacko64 woof-CE build on my dad's Core2Duo laptop today

http://www.mediafire.com/folder/04k8b8812ccoh/testing

It has Palemoon 28.1 and Abi/Gnumeric in the adrv and kernel 4.9 with linux-firmware (default options) in zdrv.

Hello Sailor, thanks for this build. I tried it on my recent i5 laptop.
It takes a lot of time to get to X after all is loaded. It waits for a minute or more on a black screen with just a cursor on left top corner. It may need a few keystrokes to continue, at least that is what I do: hit a few keys.
I changed to kernel and zdrv.sfs from the build of micko and that boots up fine.
Strange, because that is almost the same kernel.
I had to do the same with the previous build you offered.
Maybe it has something to do with the Core2Duo laptop you built it for and with.

I works very well otherwise. Still have to find another bug. ;-)

Has anyone have an updated version of Slacko64 6.9.9.9 with FF and LO, on which the software packages are updated, essentially Firefox, but it will also be nice if it has all the dependencies needed to run the newest version of Skype?
