G'day norgo,

I have tried your slacko as a frugal manual install and almost everything is fine with my usual applications and operations.

But as you can see from the screenshot, the desktop drive icons have too much labelling so there is an overlap where there are two rows. The first row is also higher up the desktop which also affects some other packages (my pwidgets overlaps the icons at the right edge of the screen).

Where do I find how to have just one line under the drive icons - I prefer sda1, sda2 sda3 etc as I know the important partitions (my data).

I do not want two or more lines.

P.S. I found the problem fix in Desktop>Puppy Desktop>Desktop Icons>Drives where un-buttoning the Show Labels for Each Partition leaves just the partition code. And lowering the Edge Gap runs them closer to the bottom of the screen.
So that's no problems with this slacko for me so far .

Did not check the Slacko 32bit version, but I assume results would be the same.

Checked the offered help in all programs.
These programs had a help offered, but selecting help options offered no help documents.
Got error or nothing visible to see.

Those should be self explnatory, directly from my notes. 'hardinfo' is a lost cause. The 'help' is totally broken even in the latest version at github. I will remove it. We have inxi and Roger's excellent PupSysInfo (which can create reports) as a good replacement. It will stay in the PPM for those who still require it.

As for mtpaint I'll patch it so that it is more obvious that you can get the help -aka 'mtpaint handbook' - from the PPM.. I'm not including 2MB of mtpaint help!!! (or patching with a web link).

Sure, I can find out if you have 'intel' graphics but it is not a 'one-size-fits-all' solution. (Hmm.. probably if we were relying on udev instead of 'xorgwizard-automatic' to set up X then we would be ok...).

Compiling a database of chips that work with the 'fix' will be very tedious and very 'hit and miss'.

I'm open to ideas... anyone? Maybe I should add a script to do this and issue instructions in the release notes to execute this script if you have problems with 'Intel HD Graphics'?

Maybe you affected guys should post some logs. (/var/log/Xorg0.log maybe).

I haven't tried this solution yet but will soon. It's interesting to know that this might solve it. Thanks norgo for posting the idea! I think I read somewhere that someone also said that using i915.modeset=0 helped. I'll be using my trusty Pentium M laptop more often again, which has this problem more frequently. Seems odd that it could be a gfx card problem when I don't get the issue in jwm905, I always wondered how to debug it so I'll see if anything interesting pops up in /var/log/Xorg0.log when it happens... thanks for that clue.

Try this:
Puppy Event Manager->Desktop Icons

Checking "show labels for each partition"

If this is selected you will see more info under the drive icons.

So, if checked UN-check it.
Select "Refresh/Realign existing icons
Hit OK.

There are 2 32 bit versions and 3 64 bit versions - all have their own theme - changeable of course.

There is a new var in woof that allows individual naming. The last three fields indicate KERNEL(-HIGHMEM)-BROWSER-OFFICE (Note - my convention only, the builder can choose to use the facility or not)

kernel is either 3.16, 4,4 or 4.9 (latest versions at upload)
browser is either FF (firefox) or PM (palemoon) - (latest versions at upload)
office is either LO (libreoffice) or ABI (abiword/gnumeric/goffice)
highmem is either 4G (sees only 4GB RAM) or PAE (potentilally 'sees' 64GB RAM) - applicable to 32 bit versions only

NB: ONE 32 bit iso does not have -uefi - this will not boot on UEFI machines unless you use legacy BIOS; the other 1 should (as long as the UEFI firmware is 64 bit ). All 64 versions have UEFI boot enabled, with a fallback for legacy BIOS.

ALL browsers and office progs are sent to the A DRIVE. You can strip that out and install your own browser/office prog if you wish.
Of course you can change kernels (if you do a hdd or USB install) to any kernel you like - YMMV.

Using Grub4dos as bootloader

First bootup:
Booted to a black screen.
Had to hard shutdown.

Added "nouveau.modeset=0" to the kernel line of Grub4dos boot entry.

Next boot went to desktop with no problems.

Seems strange to me, that other versions of Puppy will boot to desktop, with no requirement for "nouveau.modeset=0" .

The PuppyPin file allows for placing icons relative to the left edge. Since Puppy also wants to place some icons along the right edge, it needs to first find the screen width and then do a little arithmetic to determine what value to put in the PuppyPin file for those icons. This is why we have fixPuppyPin.
With no "lock" icon, fixPuppyPin will no longer move any icons.

That's the "Icons desktop arrangement (apps)" called Minimal. I've never used the Trash and always disliked the "Recycling Bin" middle-man in Windows but I do like the Puppy Standard desktop icon arrangement for easy clicking too. The "Original Pup" theme in Menu -> Desktop -> Puppy Theme Manager has it as default, if you click that and press Apply they should come back.

When using pmedia=ataflash / PUPMODE = 13 on slacko-6.9.9.6-k3.16-4G-PM-ABI, only the first save seemed to work, after that, any time I click on the save icon on desktop, it has the "Request to save" splash message but then the "Saving" message never comes up, so after every reboot the save icon will be where it was originally and "Updating layered filesystem" happens again. I used the save to folder option on an ext4 partition. In the past this happened when something was "open" and it was waiting for that thing to finish, I watched /tmp/snapmergepuppyrequest come up and then disappear though. The saving at shutdown is the same way, it says that it's saving, but it really doesn't. I added some pets, and it saved their entries to the menu but not the actual pets into the savefile, so "part of" ppm manages to write to the savefile there. I'll look for more clues.

edit: I narrowed it down to woof-CE commit 5213 saves successfully in pupmode 13 and commit 5281 doesn't... so far.

I can confirm the bug on F2FS filesystem (save folder) too but works fine in a save file. I'll raise an issue on github. I think I know the commit that did the damage.

The Pale Moon browser has a separate Linux Installer program (script file).

You install and run the program to do updates.

In Tahrpup this is what had to be used to check for and do updates to Pale Moon.
The process built into the browser did not work.
It was added to Tahrpup and given a menu entry in menu->Internet.
