I am running Puppy Linux Slacko 6.3 from a cd and it's been alright. So i thought i'd give Tahrpup-6.0.5_PA a try and see which version of Puppy i like the best. So i ran Tahrpup and it loaded alright but for some reason i couldn't get the Desktop centered in the screen and i was unable to use right-click on the wired mouse? Could this be because i was using the save file for Slacko? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks

They are based on completely different libraries, so that is not a surprise at all.

I think if you boot the Tahrpup CD with the pfix=ram option, then when you shut down it will ask to create its own, separate, Save file and use that when it reboots. I think.

Back up your Slacko Save file before you try it.

There is a chance the Tarpup iso did not get correctly downloaded and burned to the CD.

No it is not trying to use the Slacko save.

On initial boot you should have gotten the initial setup screen.

Adjustments can be made from it.

The resolution setting was probably guessed wrong.

Are you saying you tried to adjust and could not?

The mouse issue.
Try the mouse setup.
menu->Setup->Mouse/keyboard Wizard->

Usually if the mouse works at all, it will usually work correctly.
That is why I wonder if you just got a bad install on the CD.

From experience, I can tell you that the problem is not with Tahrpup. It's
the new version of jwm not recognizing your screen size properly.

Try your Tahrpup with the wmx or the icewm window manager, and your
screen size will be recognized ok, with the right-side icons appearing on
screen where they should be, not off screen.

Agree with bigpup. Tahrpup won't use a SlackoSaveFile/Folder. When SaveFiles/Folders are created their names will bear a designation pertaining to the Puppy which created them, e.g. slackosave-xxx. Only another "slacko" will try to load a slackosave.

Regarding the mis-aligned desktop, there is also a Menu>Setup>Xorg Video Wizard for changing the resolution of making adjustments to the X & Y co-ordinates. But, Tahrpup should have "guessed correctly" unless your computer has a peculiar monitor. Either you've had a bad download, or the latter. But to help you with the later, we'd have to know exactly what your setup is: What Laptop? or if a desktop, what computer and monitor?

I personally have not had a problem with jwm. But if you experience one, either try:

install FbBox into Tahrpup, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 018#769018 which will enable you to choose Openbox Window manager and has several nifty features. [That's just easier than trying to get window managers from debian to run correctly in Puppies].

I've had this problem before with a Puppy where the screen resolution was correct but the screen shifted about a cm to the right or left (can't remember which). One can fix it by using xvidtune in the xorg video wizard via menu.

It was/is a common feature of CRTs where the flyback signal is none standard. I remember it first surfacing with the Sinclair QL using TVs in monitor mode.

Have finally got Tahrpup to load with the correct screen size when i boot up the machine. Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice.

So what did you do to fix it??
