Command Line Interface to Puppylinux Menu

#1 Post by s243a »

Has anyone tried to make a command-line interface to the puppylinux menu.

I'm thinking something like: vi, minimum proffit, etc...

although something like the gui interface for net-setup.sh in fatdog64 could be interesting also since it runs independently of an X server.

Are you thinking about launching programs, or editing the menu?
Have you looked at things like dmenu?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Interesting idea. Most menu programs need a GUI so I guess you want something that displays in a virtual terminal (ie. urxvt)?

Note that there are loads of similar programs - dmenu is just a well known one so it sprang to mind.

I'm pretty sure I have seen some that are terminal based.

Also some look at everything in the bin directories whereas others actually look at the .desktop files.

There probably aren't a lot of people using anything like this in Puppy, so you may want to google a bit or look at what people are using in other distros (Arch for example tends to have people using a lot of the more obscure software).

Hello s243a.

I didn't announce it on the English side, but perhaps you're looking for
something like this?
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#877450
It started off as a "panel" menu for echinus, and I got carried away!

If you install it, please read the "required / dependencies" note at the top of the script.

I haven't looked at it for awhile (I produced this a year and a half ago), but
off the top of my head, you certainly need the real less, it won't work with
the busybox one. Also a recent version of urxvt and bash (IIRC).

There are various panels, various approaches: one panel for general apps,
one for default apps, one for common dirs, one for prefered apps.

It uses the ANSI capabilities a lot; some people were freaked by this.
Also that it is basically a CLI app, although it tries to hide it! ;)

It takes a few seconds to set itself up. If you're the jiffy type, you may not
like it. After that it's rather fast.

It is bilingual French-English, automatically, depending on what your
$LANG variable is. If you have an "English-speaking" ;) Puppy, it'll run in
English.

Anyway if you choose it and have some questions, just ask, I'll do my best
to answer you. Same if you need translations of the French posts about it
in the thread.

I stopped developing it because nobody seemed interested... But if
someone shows interest, I may get back to it.

IHTH. BFN.

Hey you, amateurs coders, how can you aim to develop the menu of an OS?
It will be impossible for you.
See here how many people a "professional" company needed to do the same:

Shame on you...

BTW, mukstart works great, Thanks.

Hello all.

This post is to get Galbi to eat his shirt!!!

This announces my excellent, thoroughly researched, and finely designed
and detailed menus for aemenu and aepanel! (Ahem.) They work on any
window manager.

Not that I really wish to toot my own horn, but it seems I have to, nobody
has stepped forward to do it for me!!!

My latest development on aemenu / aepanel is illustrated here. For the
rest, please use the forum's Search function with "aemenu" as search
term and "musher0" as author.

pdmenu is quite nice. You may have to take some time to get your menus setup, but worth a look.
Here's a bit of a review on K.Mandla's site:
