How do I upgrade Gnumeric package? [SOLVED]

#1 Post by Dyno Spoid »

What is the correct way to upgrade Gnumeric in Puppy 2.02?

I've found a lot of information on installing new packages and rolling your own Puppy CD, but nothing on upgrading installed packages.

I want to upgrade Gnumeric v1.4.3 which came with Puppy to the current v1.5.1. Puppy has its own hard disk drive partition.

Thanks, Dyno

FULL BACKGROUND:
I installed standard Puppy 2.02 which came with Gnumeric v1.4.3, and it works fine, except it can't save to a locally mounted FAT-16 partition. It can save to the local Puppy partition.

The system in question has a NTFS Windows NT OS partition, NTFS swap partition, Puppy Linux partition, Puppy Swap partition, and shared FAT-16 for data.

The Write application can save to the FAT-16 partition's folder in question, and the .XLS file saved locally can be moved to the FAT-16 folder. It therefore has something to do with Gnumeric saving to the FAT-16 partition.

Gnumeric news shows v1.5.1 fixes several file-save issues.

It seems that upgrading Gnumeric has a good shot at fixing the issue.

2.6 Kernel Supporting FAT-16

#3 Post by Dyno Spoid »

That's an interesting thought, that the kernel option might have been disabled and the kernel compiled without FAT-16 support. However, if the 2.02 Puppy kernel didn't support FAT-16 partitions I wouldn't be able to mount the partition, nor copy a file to it.

In /etc/fstab, I use: /dev/hda6 /mnt/hda6 msdos defaults 0 2

Thanks for the idea, but I'll need to try something else.

SOLVED

Thanks Mark! I upgraded Gnumeric.

Unfortunately, it did not solve the file-save problem, which turned out to be Gnumeric trying to write long file names to a FAT-16 partition.

A new topic will be started on this:
How do I get Puppy to write long file names to a FAT-16 partition?
