PostPosted: Fri 16 Jun 2017, 07:40    Post subject:  DebianDog and Derivatives Bugs and Help
Subject description: DebianDog, MintPup, XenialDog, any *.Dog community HELP

DebianDog (download link) has a set of scripts and boot methods unique for the distribution. I would say there is no other linux having more available options. Those special scripts and boot options are result of community work and all are born in this forum (except some ideas taken from porteus and FoxyRoxy linux). Adapting the scripts to other distribution - Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora etc. makes only derivative of DebianDog. Just like Puppy is based on Slackware, Ubuntu, Debian. It is still Puppy linux.

Most people reading this know the history of DebianDog and derivatives and the saintless <-> fredx181 conflict. This conflict left some (not many but some) users without place to ask questions about DebianDog based distro.

This thread is the place to start your questions, report bugs, add ideas, find help maybe and keep the DebianDog discussion alive for a while atleast.
Post the name of the derivative and your questions or bugs and I will update the second post with links to the bug found.

My opinion is DebianDog and derivatives should be community projects and deserve much more than me or fredx181. We both failed to keep the project alive. This why I will not take any active part in the development process. But I will try to help with solutions, fixes and ideas as much as I can in this or any reopened thread.

My view is someone else should take over control on the organisation page and any new started thread. If it is fredx181 I'm fine by this also. But I'm the one who created this project and my work is included in every DebianDog version or derivative (even if you can't find my name in most scripts). I will post what I see properly to say in any DebianDog related thread.

Bottom line:
DebianDog based linux needs a development team.
I am available as contributor. Developers Wanted!

Edit: Sorry, but seems the one man show continues:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=958019#958019
You can post your questions there to the current DebianDog maintainer.

Edit2: Read Fred's post about this here:

Hi Toni !

I did hesitate to write ...afraid of risking to make a mistake .
I do agree mostly with your post......but one thing keeps spoiling the whole Party in my humble opinion .

"Skipping the names of the people contributing to the scripts doesn't make them Fred's own scripts and keeping them without free open source license is a shame."

Sounds as if he had committed a capital crime .
Why not just stop attacking and shaming fred ( for what ?).......doing this all over again and again is just like sentencing someone who is not guilty. It will not help anyone , at least yourself.
For me it is like you are chasing the phantoms of your own cognitive dissonance. Why can`t you see that .Your post would have been so much better if you did not wrote this sentence above ,why not even edit your post and remove this sentence to show a signal of peace and reconciliation.
I myself would be more happy ,if this endless accusations would stop.

For the rest of your post....there is nothing i would not agree with .

Greetings Toni !

Because what I wrote is true backi.
I gave many signals for peace. Remember the deleted review thread?
And OK - my edit above as per you recommendation is one more signal.

Toni

Nothing worthwhile to add here, but just wanted to mention...

I finally got around to setting up a frugal install of XenialDog 32 bit on USB stick using Porteus boot/changes.dat, and it's fantastic. Yes, both booting and especially saving are a bit slow compared to std. Puppies, but the flexibility/security/power of apt/Synaptic on top of a speedy, Puppy-like run-in-RAM system is the bomb! Smile

A plethora of new-to-me tools to explore, as well...

Imported some of my favorite theming stuff and added Xfce panel so as to have the ability to use the excellent Whisker menu (on left... everything to the right of the menu button is the standard, included LXpanel), added a few favorite apps, and voila... greatness.

Interestingly and surprisingly, after setting up on a laptop, I then booted the same stick on my desktop computer - using the laptop-established save file - and the system automatically recognized and connected to my home router via an entirely different WiFi chip/USB dongle! How cool is that?! Cool And everything else just worked OOTB on the desktop, as well (different screen/resolution, mouse, keyboard, etc).

Thanks to Fred (and Toni) for this excellent OS!! Very Happy

Bob

Thanks Moat.

Sure:
https://debiandog.github.io/doglinux/
And since backi doesn't want to share the latest news, the current DebianDog maintainer continues the one man show here:
https://debiandog.github.io/doglinux/zz05xenialdog.html
He opened discussion there and poor Elsa is the first victim.
What happened, Fred? Her comment wasn't friendly enough? Or you just couldn't resist to test your new super mod powers to delete comments? Smile
Anyway the discussion there is "open". I will update the first post.

Stop shaming Fred? He doesn't need my help for that, backi. All community contributions to the project taken away by one man.
Same game, different name.

Lets concentrate one real Puppy linux now.

Toni

If you don't shut up about fred I'm deleting this thread. You started the first post bitching about him and you just won't let it go. Please, concentrate on the purpose of the thread and forget about fred.

You should have put a link to a download site in your first post instead of waiting until the eighth post in the thread. You can edit your posts.

Great Compliments to Mr. Flash!

"If you don't shut up about fred I'm deleting this thread."

Mr. Flash,
you are right:
please do delete all posts
from saintless. His exclusive job is to
persecute, insult, Invent lies against Mr. Fred,
who is one of the best
constructor in puppy linux world!

Just for info, so it's clear where I stand:

I wrote a while back in the Xenialdog 32 thread:
Quote:
I will never do anything anymore on my own with DebianDog, but -as I said- maybe, maybe try to help if asked and/or appropriate

That stands, I will not start anything ever carrying the name "DebianDog"

So, I'd say, the road is wide open for anyone to develop under the name DebianDog.

And at the time there is a new (improved) Debiandog (or whatever it's named) I will try to promote it, e.g. adding to DogLinux website, or any other way I possibly can do to spread it to the world! Smile .

XenialDog on the other hand, is a different matter.
I said already before, Xenialdog exists thanks to the community development that had been done with "DebianDog" or "Mintpup"
But the name is different and for the most solely done by me.

And in case it's not clear:
I don't claim anything at all, e.g. ownership.
And if someone wants to use the "know-how" or include any script of mine from any Dog related distro, it's perfectly fine by me.

P.S. I will not take any further part in this thread, (still reachable through PM though)

Fred

Hi Flash.

It is up to you. I will answer Fred's post now. I don't take orders who to answer or not. In my humble opinion "Shut up" should not be used by forum moderator (I write this with all my respect to you).

Sorry about this small "crime". Corrected now.

Fred
You have commits in DebianDog (I repeat - DebianDog) repositories even the last days. So what you wrote a long time ago isn't true:
Quote:
I will never do anything anymore on my own with DebianDog, but -as I said- maybe, maybe try to help if asked and/or appropriate.

And you still didn't put license on all DebianDog (community) scripts. Not yours, Fred - also mine and other contributors work is included inside. Some people respect the license and don't put their name on someone else work. It will be nice if you fix this. No road is open for anything otherwise. You did this and it is your responsibility to fix it.
XenialDog is a derivative and includes the same scripts and the same work. Solely is far away from the truth.

Toni
