VLC rendering problem -LxPupXenial16.08-pae

I'm testing LxPupXenial16.08-pae, This has a built-in version of VLC. Other distros on this rig, Lubuntu16.08, Windows XP also have VLC and they play the test DVD well. The LxPupXenial16.08-pae renders the frames in a sort-of 4bit colour, which makes them just about recognizable. I tried other DVD players but they all required libraries and files, which didn't seem to be in the repos. I would be grateful for any help and advice in getting this fixed.
PS I was hoping to get a jpg of a degraded frame using the snapshot in VLC but it didn't work or perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. Finally, used window capture software (screeny et al) -see below

You haven't said what your hardware is, but there was a bug in the Intel xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.917 drivers, at one time, that caused something like that.

If that's the problem, the solution would be to get an updated package from Launchpad. It's only a single file so there's no need to use the package manager. Just download the .deb and click on it, but try it with a disposable savefile first!
e.g. this one from ~oibaf. There are no released versions of the Intel driver.

Thanks for the reply. The rig I'm using is an Asrock K7VT6 mobo, Athlon XP 3000+pae, Radeon X800 GT AGP, 2GB RAM and 500GB HDD. Since VLC plays fine in Lubuntu16.08 and Windows XP on this rig, I had more or less ruled out a hardware problem. In addition, rendering is fine in the browser and other graphics software - it's just VLC.
PS I tried changing to the vesa driver, but it made no difference to VLC.
PPS With only one reply, I decided to just forget VLC. I've installed gxine, which works fine.
