Brother DCPJ100 Unable to open print file

#1 Post by Dachsund »

I have followed the instructions here to install my Brother DCPJ100 printer on slacko puppy. When I tried to print a test page nothing happened. On checking active jobs in CUPS under 'state#' it says the following:

completed at
Fri 14 Jul 2017 06:15:23 PM PHT
"Unable to open print file: No such file or directory"

What do I do to resolve this please.

Thanks in advance
Eric

1. Which version of Slacko is this?

2. That error message is of no consequence. It shows up in recent Slackos. If your printer doesn't work, there is some other problem.

3. Please state exactly what steps you performed.

4. How is your printer connected - USB or networked?

5. Look in the folder /opt/brother/Printers/dcpj100. Do you see three folders named cupswrapper, inf, lpd?

6. Run CUPS and delete this printer. Then let CUPS rediscover it and add it again.

7. I ran some simulated tests and it looks OK to me.

1. It's version 6.3.0

3. I followed your instructions for brother, downloaded and installed debbi, then used debbi to install the lpr and cupswrapper files ussing terminal. It came up with all sorts of warnings etc but you said in most cases these can be ignored.

4. The printer is connected by USB.

5. In the folder there is no lpd file.

6. I have deleted it in cups, installed it using cups, but no difference, still won't print. When it asks for the ppd file what is this?

Thanks

Then you have made a mistake. The two DEB files I downloaded were

Code: Select all

dcpj100lpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
dcpj100cupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
If you have no lpd folder, then something went wrong with installing the first one.

That's the two files I downloaded and installed with debbi, the lpr file first then the cupswrapper file.
I've just tried installing them again with debbi,

There is something wrong with your dcpj100lpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb file. It is not extracting correctly. Download it again.

Success! Thank you very much.
I downloaded both files again, installed them, still wouldn't work. Then I saw the printer, although connected was off, so I uninstalled it and started again and this time it worked.
Thank you very much for your help.

Printing

#8 Post by Dachsund »

I am able to print now, but although the test page printed correctly, when I print anything else (pdf, document etc) the top margin disappears, so the text starts very close to the top of the page.
Any solution please?

Have you set the paper size correctly? There are instructions in How to Install Brother Printers and Scanners.

Using my Brother MFC-J470DW and Slacko630, I printed several text documents. In all cases, the margins were honoured.

If you are printing from a word processor, you could try setting a larger top margin.

Yes, I've set the paper size correctly. I can adjust the margin in documents but not much help for pdfs etc. Is a reinstall worth trying?

It's impossible to tell.

Boot up in "safe mode" using the "pfix=ram" option.

Install your printer as before and test.

Perhaps it might be the program you are using to print.

I have problems with margins in abiword printing pdf to my brother mfc-j450dw

I have no problems with margins in adobe reader 9.5.5 printing pdf to my brother mfc-j450dw
