@peebee: 19.10 +0 with stock 4.9.197 kernel installed as an update to PR10. Grub4Dos install to SSD on the 2nd gen Fujitsu S761 laptop.

Clean boot and suspend/resume. System and Dmesg checks all good, idle CPU use 1% and mem use 94Mb (Lxtask reported). Mem/SSD throughput continues to be good (2.3Gb/sec using memspeed_tester.sh), and glxgears FPS stellar at 9200 on this hardware. Early microcode not supported in this kernel as in the previous 4.9.141 thus

Code: Select all

 dmesg | grep -i microcode
MDS: Vulnerable: Clear CPU buffers attempted, no microcode
core: PEBS disabled due to CPU errata, please upgrade microcode
on this hardware. No multimedia tests other than some youtubes in SlimJet 23.0.11.0 run-as-spot from SFS. Overall, continues to be quick and solid for me.

Enjoying the true synaptics driver acceleration while it lasts :(

@B.K.Johnson: I'm on board because I like the snap of this series of pups and based on my experience with upup aa,bb,cc,dd, and ee what I learn should apply to upupff if it can be built. That is supposed to be a LTS release. All of the fairly extensive mods I did in aa to blend pcmanfm in with this JWM/rox based pup have worked in bb, cc, dd, and ee to my delight. Just this old dogs way of thinking.

Cheers,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Marv, please excuse my deficent knowledge: how would I do the 'update to PR10'?
As of now, I've downloaded this new Ermine, put some of its files in a directory, changed menu.lst, and rebooted. Not surprisingly, it booted fine on this Dell laptop E6410.

In the past, I would have made a savefolder after booting a new puppy, and then gradually made changes by copying from the old savefolder.

Apparently you booted the PR10, and then updated it to this new version? Could you please tell me how to do that?

Code: Select all

ls -l /initrd/mnt/dev_save/Puppys/Ermine/

Semantically maybe I should have said update from my PR10 install that I was using as my daily. At any rate, I have a small savefile that carries look'n'feel primarily. It's been around for a while, at least through all the PR versions of upupee. When I do an update, I first backup a copy of my savefile, designated PR10 in this case, then rename a copy of the savefile appropriately, mount and scrub that savefile, particularly if a kernel change is expected. /etc/udev, /etv/X11, /etc/simple_network_setup, /etc/asound.conf, /var/local/xorg_udev, /lib/modules if present, and any patches I have applied that are fixed in the update. This forces a clean boot. Replace the old system files in the relevant boot directory with the ones from the new iso, and reboot choosing the 'new' savefile. Seems complicated but it really is not. I have a little script that does the basic scrub and I always glance through the savefile anyway to see if anything looks odd. I use savefiles rather than folders as I like the modularity and the size limit enforces some tidyness. All my data and shared profiles for email, browser, clipboard, current work, downloads, etc. are on a separate data partition shared by all the pups in my kennel.

So what

The only thing this may cause is Puppy Package Manager will still show stuff that may not be the latest version.
Ubuntu will stop maybe updating the Eoan Ermine repositories.

Well, get over it!

Most of the stuff, in any of the Ubuntu repositories, are not the latest version of anything.
Why?
Because, if they update a program to a newer version.
There is a good chance, the dependency stuff needs updated, to run it.
That could turn into a big bunch of stuff.
That could cause, versions of other programs still used, to not work anymore.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Hi @recobayu

Thanks for your report.....

I hadn't set things up for other people to do woof-ce builds.... in fact I'm amazed and puzzled that those were the only download fails....... I suspect that older pets are being found in other cases......

Anyway - I've uploaded k4.9.197 to: https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... e-kernels/

and I've uploaded the missing components you've identified to: http://www.smokey01.com/peebee/ in various locations.

I also found there was an error for the leafpad entry in http://www.smokey01.com/peebee/upupee/P ... upee-extra which I have updated.

If you have further problems - please send me a pm.

Cheers
peebee

19.10 frugal Grub4Dos install on my Fujitsu S761 updated to 19.10 +1. No problems seen as yet. Smooth and quick. My PcManFm 1.2.5 integration pkg. first made in upupaa continues to work well. I used psynclient for the first time and the flsynclient to psynclient transition was smooth. I did make one change to psynclient to allow the Accelfactor I use which is higher than 0.010. I posted it to that thread.

I doubt there's any real benefits, if at all. But it's a well known fact that some people like to always be on the very 'cutting edge' of everything. And they don't care if that means 'upgrading'/'updating' everything far more often than most.

That's the way they like it... (*shrug*) And let's face it, doing so in Puppy involves a significant amount less grief than it would if you were doing the same with mainstream distros. I mean, with Puppy you can keep a 'good' one as your 'daily driver', and just 'play around' with the new versions.

I never understood, when I was still a member of the Ubuntu Forums, why it was considered 'normal' to ditch a perfectly stable, well-fettled LTS version for the first in the next round of short-termers, the instant it appeared. But it seemed to be expected of you....

Funny lot. (*shakes head in amusement*) But every Linux community has, indeed needs, its regular crew of inveterate 'testers'. We're no different.

On the Ubuntu Forums, there's a 'hard-core' group of members that are always at least 6 months ahead of everybody else. These are the 'beta-testers', and the instant a version reaches release status, they immediately ditch that & move on to downloading the very first, rough drafts of what will become the next release in 6 months time. And this, apparently, is ALL they do....an endless, never-varying routine of downloading daily builds, every day, installing, methodically testing, filing bug-reports.....before turning round and doing it all over again the very next day! Rinse, wash, and repeat.....day in, day out, ad infinitum.

Crazy way to live.....but developers rely on people like that.

Having millions of willing testers (--current versions) is great for those that like to track the likes of old stable, that's still updated for security issues, but otherwise very very stable ... and well tested (across millions if not billions of hours and a very broad "test-bed" i.e. 'live/current'). Debian old-stable is the primary example for that. Fixed/trusted repository, extremely stable. What bugs may exist are known/documented and you can work around those. Personally however I gave up on Debian when they legally locked themselves into using systemd.

Booting upupee at final stage before starting X I read some odd code at screen. I have exited X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to read the code and I got aware that vercmp is called at this stage with an error response like:

Code: Select all

# vercmp
BusyBox v1.31.0 (2019-08-05 23:22:55 +08) multi-call binary.

Usage: vercmp version1 lt|gt|le|ge|eq version2

return value 0 if true, else 1

l = less, g = greater, t = than, e|eq = equal
Is it normal?

+2 downloaded via delta. md5sum of generated iso correct.
Run both as a pristine Grub4Dos install to SSD and as an update of my +1 install with full pcmanfm integration on

Code: Select all

In both cases, boot was clean, nothing new seen in Dmesg checks, no early microcode loading (as in +0 and +1), idle cpu use at 1%, idle mem use at 87Mb (pristine) and 91Mb update), mem and SSD throughput good and unchanged from +1, video FPS excellent at better than 8700 FPS. Touchpad sets up perfectly in pristine, already done in +1. Fresh 256 Mb EXT2 unencrypted savefile created for the pristine install. On reboot all settings remembered. So far it all looks good. No tests of CD or DVD yet. Oh Ya, still uses the synaptics touchpad driver so has nice acceleration :)
