Use Grisbi for Puppy's bookkeeping program?
Hi,
I have been using Grisbi for about a couple of months because I can use both the Linux and Windows versions on the same date, depending on which O/S I'm in when I use it. The data stays in a file on the Windows hard-drive.
I upgraded to Fat Puppy 4 on my Lexar 512meg JumpDrive, using the upgrade feature and there was no problems with either program (Linux/Windows) not accepting the data file.
Happy....you bet...

The reason I suggest OO is because it has templates and (am I right) a macro Basic language - and therefore existing templates with quite advanced book keeping may be available.
I have a tendency to use programs that I know well in different ways - that is why I suggested the spreadsheet method.
Also just because you found nothing - does not mean it does not exist . . .
try brainboost.com as a search engine
Linux and Unix must be available with some accounting progs that are suitable . . .
Another possibility is running on Wine after the weekend (assuming John Murga completes this)

That's a big plus point for Grisbi.guest wrote:Hi,

I have only looked at Grisbi briefly, and one thing I noticed is that it uses the Euro symbol and there didn't seem to be an option to change that to the Dollar "$" symbol ...but I do recall their web page stating that it can handle the Dollar character for currency ...do you know how to change to $?
The other thing about Grisbi is printing, currently needs Latex.
...I have to send them a reminder about that, one of the developers said that they could implement plain Postscript printing, just hadn't bothered to do it.
Lobster,
yeah, you're probably right, Gnumeric or OO Calc would probably do what I need. But I've never been into using spreadsheets ...had to use them where I worked (a couple of years ago, when I had a job), but they were already setup -- classlists, had to enter student exam results.

Hi
Here's a printscreen of how to get to the area to change/add the different currencies to the different accounts you have. More than one type of currency can be used as long as they are different accounts, and there is a question of exchange rates when you want to pass money between the different accounts as well.
My wishlist would include the ability to sort the different fields of an account.

Somehow the printscreen was not included....I'll try again. I guess I needed to change the extention to .jpg so it would pass as a picture....

grisbi vs quasar
LINUX Canada has released a GPL version of its full fledged accounting package. It is an rpm file.I have tried it under windows but I cant install it in PUPPY as unrpm gives error. Please have a look at it if it could be installed.
the full version of unrpm should work ok
the smaller version uses Puppy's Busybox version of rpm2cpio, which sometimes does not work
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?p=7148#7148
the LINUX Canada accounting package requires ICU, which Puppy does not have
http://icu.sourceforge.net/

After downloading both fiels where should I extract these files what next?
it looks like it is all in a folder in /opt
so you can extract the folder anywhere and drag the folder to /opt with the middle mouse button to make a symlink
if you do not have Puppy installed option 2 to the hard drive, you will have to make a new symlink everytime Puppy boots (a line in rc.local can do that, or in a wrapper script)
it can be tricky to get a package not designed for a particular distro to work in that distro ... especially a small distro like Puppy, which may have missing libraries and utilities, and also the Busybox replacements for the Gnu-Utilities may cause problems

Grisbi is in repository puppy 2
You are using Puppy (personal OS, root and user) at home, use Grisbi foy your personal accounting, but not more.
Homebank does the job to, but you must set it as you need. Grisbi has an official stucture yet included.

Kmymoney
Frenchy like Grisbi, commonwealth citizen would prefer kmymoney (KDE) needed but dollars and pounds are accepted.
Homebank would be enough for home budget (default in puppy)

What a computer is used for ? For pleasure, sure
What a computer is used for ? For pleasure, sure :
Multimedia, graphics, surfing in internet. but sometimes we have to work at home, repairing, house keeping and making accounts.
You are fond of computing, You should much more work on improving and making programs specialised in professional activity : cooking, stock management, accounts, costs.
I dont imagine my brother using Linux to invoice his customers ( he does not speak english at all). Homebank is the only business pet available ! perhaps i am wrong,

Grisbi for home only.
Puppy is a little OS, with homebank included. You can add Grisbi for checking your banks accounts, but more would be unofficial. Bookeeping tools must be agreed by local governements, rules.
So Grisbi, no. Not for Business, for home only (in my opinion)
