Subject description: how to cut down on installable packages

Using a Dog-based OS, you want to install a small package, but a full desktop environment comes with it.

Case in point : gnumeric (desktop environment is fvwm-crystal)

Try installing gnumeric, a small package, and look at the final size you have to download and install : 60+MB and 200+MB installed.

Use --no-install-recommends to cut down on installable packages :

$sudo apt install --no-install-recommends gnumeric
Result : KB of installable packages. And a fully functional app.

Conversely, if you want to install recommends, do :
$sudo apt install --install-recommends gnumeric

Finally, you can also install suggests :
$sudo apt install --install-recommends --install-suggests gnumeric
But you will end up with a sizable download, this is why it is most often not used.

Hi labbe5

All Dog based OS's have as default set --no-install-recommends
It's set in /etc/apt/apt.conf:
Code:
APT::Install-Recommends false; APT::Install-Suggests false;

Default for Debian itself (or Ubuntu) is installing with install recommends (although without install suggests), which indeed results in much more space used.

Using the --install-recommends can be useful sometimes, if you don't care much about amount space used, but also using --install-suggests is extreme, ridiculous !
I tried this on DD Stretch:
Code:
apt install --install-recommends --install-suggests gnumeric

And got this!!
Code:
Need to get 5,689 MB of archives.
After this operation, 18.6 GB of additional disk space will be used.

Cannot be right I'd say Rolling Eyes

Fred
