Hi sindi,

Yes. Do switch to a different "Forum". Actually, it would be the same Forum, just a different Section -- same friendliness and helpfulness-- just attracting some or more people who may have no interest in xenialPup-7.0.6 32-bits with kernel 4.1 but do have an interest and experience in compiling kernels and/or drivers.

I usually recommend this Section for technical question, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=3, but as you are really working on 'the cutting edge', perhaps this one would be better, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=7. I note, for example, that on the latter is a thread started by stemsee about "kernel compiling in woof-ce", http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=96723.

I kind-of have the feeling that some of what you did might have been easier if you understood Woof --the application used to build Puppies-- and that those who maintain Woof would be helped by your knowledge and experience.

mikesLr

P.S. You may want to take a look at this thread "Kernel Compiling - Kernel-kit ", http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=645979#645979. I search for it yesterday; couldn't find it. Tried again just now; must have somehow changed my "search term". As peebee's post on the 3rd/last page of the thread notes, "Longer answer - kernel kit is now a part of woof-ce and is therefore held on github from where you can download woof-ce including kernel-kit
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE/tree/testing/kernel-kit ."

You also may find helpful/interesting wiak's "Auto-build a Puppy iso; single script with optional gui", http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=965541#965541

Finally, I suggest that you single-click the zdrv.sfs file in Xenial or Tahrpup and select View. When you do, you'll discover most of the files are the firmware and drivers in /lib. As far as I can tell files in other top folders relate to aufs -- the mechanism which enables Puppies to 'merge' squash file systems in RAM and operate as Frugal Installs. You'll need to understand that if you're intention is to build a kernel and drivers to be used in Puppy.

no wireless. That is not necessary. Winter time, water everywhere in streets, not boat, wireless is useless.
Even in summertime, wireless and laptops are useless, if you just have to get fun in Your Puppy Linux laboratory.
But new generations would like to take advantage of WifI points appearing everywhere in the civil world, railways stations and trains for instance..

"Good morning. I'm on the Dell E6410 with 4GB. It's from about the year 2010. I don't understand "old box"; is this 32-bit Xenial not good for this computer? Please excuse me: I still do not understand the advantages and disadvantages of a 32-bit vs 64-bit operating system on a computer with a 64-bit processor."
Sheldonisiac, with a Puppy 32 bits you can do everything that a Puppy 64 bits will do.
But with a Puppy 64 bits, you will loose lot of apps, even if downloads will be faster.
Like music, mono and stereo, applications 64 bits are 32 bits transformed 64 bits, as mono would be repeated twice on each channel, but not recorded differently to get real stereo..

If you don't have enough ram a 64bit system will actually run slower.

wireless : lib/firmware replaced with tharpup's one for people needing wireless to move with their there laptops, at least from sofa to sofa, not to be jailed apart from their family, in the attic or cellar, or garage..
The computer is attached with its leash to a ring fixed to the wall (reverso translation) . Linux geeks like to compute apart.. for themselves.
but 99.5% of people prefer to move... and share Puppy, at least show Puppy, not only to geeks

All opinions aside, hamoudoudou, xenialPup-7.0.6 has the frisbee connector for wi-fi.
If you have a wifi connection, frisbee will connect your computer to it.

Concerning wifi drivers, xenialPup-7.0.6 has at least this list of 38:

So very strange that sns does not show wireless..
I start again musher0 xenialpup with no pupsave to check is it is an error from my usage.

Subject description: no pdf reader and no defaultaudioplayer

[quote="s243a"]Hello musher0,

I noticed that you main link linked to a french version. I'm not sure if this is right one or not for English users.

I saw some version here:
http://augras.eu/puppy_linux/?dir=musher0/Dpup_Stretch/ISOs_de_base

Three dpups with older kernels that were recommended to me as being non-PAE (suitable for Pentium M 400MHz FSB laptops).

iso PuppyStretch-7.0.0a1_31479.iso 235.76 MiB 30.10.17 15:57:47
iso PuppyStretch-7.0.0a1_31643.iso 215.32 MiB 30.10.17 16:01:28
iso PuppyStretch-7.0.0a1_4138.iso 217.84 MiB 30.10.17 16:05:12

The 3.16.43 version (smaller than 3.14.79!) works very well on my 2003 1.4GHz Pentium M Gateway 200ARC with 1GB RAM.

Two small omissions:

defaultaudioplayer points to pmusic, which is not there. I changed to mpv.

I could find no pdf reader, just a couple of programs to make or convert pdfs. I installed evince from puppy package manager.

Hello all.

I have compiled earlier today bash-4.4, dated late Summer 2016, on this
xenialPup-7 32 bits. The command interpreter that we have ex-factory for it is
bash v.4.3, which goes back to 2013. You can get bash-4.4 for Puppy here.

From the Note-bash.txt file in that repository:
Quote:
If you are an English-speaker, you only need to download the pet archive marked
"elf"; it contains English and Franch locales, and the bash "man".

The "docs" archive has the html docs for bash, plus a directory of little known but
very interesting examples of use, by the authors of bash, at
~/my-documents/bash-4.4/examples).
Those examples are found in the source package, but skipped by the compiler (for
whatever reason).

The Changes log concerning the evolution from versions 4.3 to 4.4 is attached. This
compilation should also run ok on a "StretchPup" (aka "DPupStretch7").

I have been running it for half a day now, and have experienced no problems at all
with it. Any feedback welcome.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May I recommend that you back-up your pupsave file or folder before installing
this new version of bash. Also...
-=> IMPORTANT: To avoid strange behavior in your scripts and Puppy's, <=-
-=> reboot your Pup immediately after installing bash-4.4_elf.pet. <=-
Until you do, you have two bash versions on your Pup (the old one in RAM; the
new one on disk). If you do not reboot immediately, bash scripts may not know
which version to invoke and produce unpredictable results (i.e., "go haywire").
Finally, after reboot, make sure the new bash version is active by typing in console:
Code:
bash --version
The result should read
Quote:
GNU bash, version 4.4 ..., (etc.)]
Then you'll know the new version installed ok.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
