fatal:Failed to append '/initrd/pup_ro4' to unionfs

#1 Post by JFB »

I have been using Tahrpup 6.0.5 for about four weeks. So I'm still learning the Puppy way. I downloaded Gambas3_3.9.2.sfs from the Gambas One forum and tried to install/load it with SFS-Load on-the-fly. I got the following error message:
fatal:Failed to append '/initrd/pup_ro4' to unionfs

Of course I don't know what this means (other than the install failed), could you please tell me what this is and how to fix it... Thanks...

The first thing I'd suspect is a bad download. Try to download again or get it from here.

This is what didier18 told me on another forum:
Apparently this is a mount point that was not done properly ... The ".sfs" archive must be present on the session mount.
He also said:
You have to load the devx corresponding to the distribution, otherwise you will not have access to GNU tools.
What is didier18 trying to tell me? I, of course, will ask him on the Gambas One forum; but I thought I might also ask on this Beginners Help forum... I appreciate all the help I can get... Thanks...

Make sure the Gambas3_3.9.2.sfs is located in /mnt/home

The devx sfs is a package of stuff that is normally not in Puppy.
It is usually stuff that is not normally needed unless you are compiling software for Puppy.
However, some nonpuppy programs may need something that is in it.

The devx sfs package for Tahrpup 6.0.5 can be found here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pu ... 20-6.0-CE/
Download to /mnt/home
Load it by using SFS-load-on-the-fly
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Do Puppy users routinely install devx sfs packages, and/or non-Puppy sfs programs?

I'm beginning to think that I don't really need Gambas3 on my Puppy boxes, since I have it on my *buntu boxes. I kinda like Puppy for what it can do in its native state, I'm beginning to think that I don't really need to try and make Puppy into something that it may not be...

I have the devx and Gambas packages in mnt/home, I'm wondering if I really want to load/install them...

I usually load the devx, because I have to compile the Nvidia driver for my graphics hardware.
However, after doing that I unload the devx and do not miss having it.

You kind of answered your own question by the statement of your thinking about it.

Use non-puppy programs.
Sure, you can, and some work some do not.
Using PPM(Puppy Package Manager) is the best way to get them.
It can use repositories, that should have programs, that will work, and PPM looks for dependency programs/files, that may also be needed.

The problem, and it is a problem for any Linux OPS.
If the software is not specifically compiled for that specific version of the OPS. It may or may not work and may have problems.

Even Puppy program pet packages or sfs packages, found on this forum, are not going to work on every version of Puppy.

That Gambas sfs is a Puppy sfs package, so should work on Tahrpup.
It seems to be compiled with Tahrpup usability in mind.

I was involved in coding a program about 2 years ago.
At the time, it worked in most Puppy versions from series 5 onward.
Recently, I had to do some modifications to it, to get it to work in the latest versions of Puppy.
That is software coding.

PPM example

I am not in Tahrpup. I am using Xenialpup.
However Tharpup's PPM should have something.
