RC-5 changelog: 7/Jul/2019
- Update distro build to Woof-CE code defined through 7 June 2019. However, many additional code commits after that date are selectively included (thanks wdlkmpx)
- Update base Debian packages to stretch-9.9 including multiple security updates
- Update 4.9.149 kernel to the 4.19.X series (4.19.56) for improved desktop stability and enhanced support of recent PC hardware. Note: In Dpup Stretch the 4.19.X kernel defaults to the intel_pstate scaling driver for Intel Core (Sandy Bridge and newer) processors. If this is problematic for your Intel system, please add 'intel_pstate=disable' to the kernel line and reboot (
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CP ... cy_scaling). Furthermore, although the updated k4.1.48 ISO retains conventional keyboard and mouse drivers (kbd_drv.so and mouse_drv.so), the new k4.19.56 ISO mediates keyboard and mouse actions through the Evdev interface with no dependence on conventional input drivers.
Note: With some kernels the Evdev keybindings for certain keyboards may have mapping issues in the Openbox desktop environment. For example, the PrtScr, Up and End keys may not function correctly. If you observe this issue in the FbBox desktop environment, please go to FbPanel configuration -> Plugins tab -> Key Bindings -> select 'true' -> click Apply -> then restart X-server.

- Update optional adrv.sfs for fbpanel/openbox desktop environment (FbBox)

Note: The 4.9.X (32-bit) kernel of Dpup Stretch is now compiled with the retpoline aware GCC 7.3.0 which enables kernel-based mitigation of the spectre_v1 and spectre_v2 processor vulnerabilities. Eventually, kernel devs will add meltdown (Variant 3) mitigation to 32-bit x86 kernels, at which time the default 4.9.X kernel of Dpup Stretch will be updated. Mitigation of the new Variant 4 threat in established Intel chipsets is evolving and will require microcode updates for the Speculative Store Bypass Disable (SSBD) bit.
The optional 4.1.X kernel is EOL (End of Life) as of May 2018, with no built-in mitigation of meltdown or spectre vulnerabilities. Even so, the 4.1.X kernel is a versatile option when Dpup Stretch is installed to older computers.
Importantly, the default Palemoon browser of Dpup Stretch effectively mitigates the risk from speculative execution of malicious javascript characteristic of type 1, 2, 3 and 4 variants. Generally, such browser-based mitigation provides reasonable security against malicious javascript, even if the linux kernel (such as 4.1.X) is not specifically configured for additional mitigation. Of course, if you require even greater assurance, javascript-blocking extensions are available for most browsers including Palemoon.

Bugfix: 'jwm -restart' is called on a delayed basis while loading the JWM desktop. If the user is interacting with the menu or a desktop window when jwm restarts, the result can be a non-responsive desktop that may require restarting X to recover. Solution: call 'jwm -reload' rather than 'jwm -restart' while loading the JWM desktop.

https://www.debian.org/security/2017/dsa-4049
- Bugfix: FFConvert (multimedia converter) deletes other programs that also use the WORKDIR variable to define the application directory (fixed in ffconvert >= 1.4.3)
- Bugfix: set /etc/machine-id (some applications search for /etc/machine-id rather than /var/lib/dbus/machine-id)
- Bugfix: extraneous fstab binds appear as mounts in the gtkfilechooser if glib >= 2.50; Solution: recompile glib-2.50.3 with --disable-libmount (thanks pemasu). See Note-2 below.
Note-1: All window mangers, including JWM, have various faults that may require compatibility adjustments. By historical criteria, JWM is the default window manager in standard Puppy and the current JWM-2.3.7 works well for most users. However, there are reports of idiosyncrasies such as an intermittent 'window focus' issue (window becomes unresponsive to user input). If you observe this behavior, simply launching another application may free the 'frozen' window, but not always. The JWM developer is aware of this issue.
As an alternative to JWM, the current Beta-2 release includes a small adrv.sfs which provides an optional desktop environment (fbpanel/openbox) that is both comprehensive and easy to use (go to Puppy Menu -> Desktop -> WM Switcher -> FbBox). However, if you are happy with JWM, or if you plan to install a different desktop environment, just remove the optional adrv.sfs and reboot.
Note-2: As of Beta-2, the gtkfilechooser sidebar of Dpup Stretch no longer displays unwanted binds such as pts, sys or proc. Partitions displayed in the gtkfilechooser do not auto-mount but the user can populate the sidebar with bookmarks such as partitions, folders and files according to personal preference.

Note: Most Pups are released with basic firmware (19 Mb compressed in /lib/firmware of the Dpup zdrv) which provides good support for a wide range of PC hardware. However, if you require additional support not available in Dpup, please go to the following link to access a large repository of firmware assembled by forum member gyro.
gyro's firmware repository
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 573#820573
Alternatively, gyro's comprehensive firmware package is available in the first post as an fdrv.sfs which you can place with the puppy.sfs and zdrv.sfs in your frugal install, or go to the Multimedia category of the Puppy menu and use ISOMaster to add the fdrv.sfs to the original Dpup iso(s). In both scenarios, the full firmware package will be available automatically each time you boot Dpup Stretch.

- Bugfix: prevent X-server crash when launching xcalc calcuator (thanks goingnuts)
Note: The default action of the updated ROX-Filer copy/move dialog (Quiet checkbox ticked, Newer checkbox unticked and Force checkbox unticked) requires user confirmation before overwriting existing destination files. However, this behavior may be tedious for some users when copying or moving multiple files. In this scenario, the Force option (if also ticked) enables immediate overwriting of destination files without serial confirmation dialogs. Importantly, the Force checkbox defaults to the unticked state each time the copy/move dialog is called, and must be manually ticked if you wish to copy/move multiple files without confirmation.
If the 'Newer' checkbox is ticked (and Force unticked), ROX-Filer will only overwrite if source is newer than destination. User confirmation is still required if source is older than destination or if source and destination dates are identical. However, the Force option (if also ticked) will override the Newer option and forcefully overwrite destination files without regard for the file date. Consequently, the Force option should be used with an understanding of its purpose and power.
In the Options Configuration GUI of ROX-Filer there is another 'Force' checkbox which applies to the confirmation dialog you may see when deleting non-writeable items. This option does not control the Force option of the copy/move dialog.
