At first I thought that the volume I was getting from my old computer was maxed out.

But then, I install audio mixer on kodi & set master and front to 100%.

Exited kodi, and went to alsa setup and test audio.

The sound was about 4 times louder.

So somewhere in Xenialpup64 is a bug, that sets the sound incorrectly.

It does it on both my intel computer as well as on my old amd computer.

These two computers have completely different audio hardware.

I haven't tried it in Puppy, but I followed the instructions in this link to make Debian Dog louder.

You just create an /etc/.asound file. It makes a "preamp" setting you can use to turn the volume up more. It was the second example at the link that worked for me.

Retrovol is used in Xenialpup to adjust the sound.
Right click on the speaker icon on the tray.
Select full window.
Select and adjust anything you think you need.

The audio hardware abilities determines what is offered for adjustment.

No luck in using the linear setting in Retrovol to increase the sound enough.

I changed the amixer settings in /etc/init.d/10alsa to increase the sound.

After doing this the sound is almost too loud.

On thinking it over, I think the bug is in Retrovol.

But I noticed that, when changing the volume control from linear to logarithm, that seemed to really increased the volume.
