I downloaded (for Tahr 6.05, updated with fix8, non-PAE) devx and kernel source, also the 'run' file for my Geforce 7150M (from nvidia) and getnvidia.
The first three are in /mnt/home and I installed getnvidia 1.0 pet.

uname -a 3.14.56 #1 SMP PREEMPT

I downloaded both sfs's for 3.14.56 using sfsget in Tahr 6.0.5.

getnvidia says:

'You need devx package. You have a kernel source package but it does not match with the running kernel (linux-3.14.56).'
Did you load the devx and kernel source sfs?????
After placing them in /mnt/home you have to load them by using:
Boot Manager>SFS packages or SFS-load-on-the-fly.
(have to reboot if using Boot Manager)

DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER DEVX OR KERNEL SOURCE PACKAGES LOADED other than the correct ones.

After you get them loaded Getnvidia program should work.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

newbie compiling nvidia module, some progress

#17 Post by sindi »

cd /mnt/home/
sfs_load *.sfs

Now it starts to compile, says Downloading.... for a while
I see a new file nvidia.files in /mnt/home/ (listing some libraries in /usr/lib/ and some files in /usr/share/doc/deadbeef including Brazilian Portuguese help).

Then it cannot find /etc/OpenCL and is 'unable to determine the most recent NVIDIA Linux-X86 driver'.

The log file in /mnt/home/ reads:

nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'
creation time: Fri Jan 26 10:31:50 2018
installer version: 319.23

PATH: /bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/root/my-applications/bin:/usr/games

nvidia-installer command line:
nvidia-installer
--update
-a
-s
--kernel-name=3.14.56
--kernel-install-path=/lib/modules/3.14.56/kernel/drivers/video/
--tmpdir=/var/tmp

Using built-in stream user interface
ERROR: Unable to connect to remote host download.nvidia.com (Connection timed out)
ERROR: Unable to determine most recent NVIDIA Linux-x86 driver version.

I tried twice, same result.

I have the NVIDIA *.run file for this 304.137 (Geforce Go 7150M) in /mnt/home. I did not find source code at nvidia site.

Recompiling the kernel seems more straightforward and I would prefer nv to the newer driver anyway. I may need to recompile to get fbcon to work anyway. Nouveau is acceptable.

Re: kernel 3.0.25 supports nv

"Where do I find kernel config
files for Lucid and Tahr pups?
They are not in /boot (as in
Dpup)"

In Lupu 2016
/etc/modules/DOTconfig* -
probably also in other
official puppies.
In Dpup 7 with kernel 3.16,
/boot/.config
make menuconfig or edit the
config file manually

When you ran Getnivida.

Did it look like this before dropping to the prompt and starting the build process?

All items say OK?

Keep pressing rerun to check until they do.
If something will not say OK. That item is missing, not loaded, etc....

This is example:

nvidia will not compile

#21 Post by sindi »

It said everything was OK but it could not download (source code from nvidia).

.config for configuring the kernel and recompiling it to use nv instead of nouveau.
nv works in Lupu with kernels 2.6.33 and 3.0.25.

I would prefer a kernel with nv and fbcon (and smaller than default) to the nvidia driver.

kernel compiling problems and how to create a zdrv*sfs

#22 Post by sindi »

I downloaded source code for Tahr's kernel 3.14.56 and compiled a kernel using the default .config (which turned out to be the Tahr standard kernel).
It took about two hours. (I neglected to read instructions to make -j 2 for dual-core cpu). It worked.

I then spent an hour or so doing a make menuconfig and unchecking most of the options (serial, parallel, modem, ata, bluetooth, lots of video and sound that I do not have, battery since mine is dead, various file systems such as ext4, and much more).

My .config was 2/3 the size, so was my kernel (2.5 instead of 3.5MB) and it took about 2/3 or less as long to compile. (And I left in a lot of things that I should have left out because I don't understand what they are).

But when I tried to boot it could not find the tahr sfs file - what might I have wrongly omitted? I attempted to read all the help files but they are in a foreign vocabulary.

---

A simpler approach is to use the Sulu1 3.0.25 kernel and modules. Sulu1 (Lupu) has no zdrv file. How do I make a zdrv*sfs of what is in /lib/modules/3.0.25 and also any required firmware to transplant to Tahr? If that works, I would then make a very few minor changes (add fbcon and tileblit, remove things I am certain of) and compile again. Smaller kernel, faster compile, and hopefully correct nvidia driver.

I got lots of help from people in a discussion of Xenial 7.06 who politely noted that my problem was not very relevant there.

HP Pavilion dv6500 video issue loading sfs

#23 Post by loubee »

Hi Bigpup,

I have a HP Pavilion dv6500 and I am trying to have functional hard disk installation of Puppy Linux. I have an issue with the graphic driver.

Driver required: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Kernel version 3.14.54
Puppy Linux version: tahr64-6.0.5

I am very happy because it's the first time I was able the have functional graphic with Linux using these instructions : puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0 and the graphic works good.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=112567

I then followed these instructions "How to install Nvidia driver run package"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110611

After that, I also followed instructions for "Nvidia drivers"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72405

I was able to download the pilot ".run" file from Nvidia and the sfs devx package and kernel through the sfsget cmd line.

-NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.108.run
-devx_tahr64_6.0.5.sfs
-kernel_sources-3.14.54-tahr64.sfs

All the files are copied in mnt/home. When I try to load the sfs files, I always get the same message "fatal:Failed to append '/initrd/pup_ro4' to unionfs".

I tried to follow instructions with
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... dc2339893e

But even when I tried different dowload sites for the sfs, I always get the same fatal message.

What are the next step to make Puppy Linux functional with (with Nvidia graphic pilot) and a hard disk installation (boot from hd1).

Thanks

Only do what it says here to install a Nvidia driver package.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110611
Do not try multiple ways to do it.

Are you sure you are using the 3.14.54 kernel?
Tahrpup64 6.0.5 was released at different times using different kernels.

Menu->System->Pup-Sysinfo->Sys-Specs->Kernel will tell you for sure what kernel is being used.

This is the Tahrpup kernel sources sfs that has to be used.

Tahrpup64 6.0.5 needs to be installed as a frugal install and be booted using a save.
If you are booting using puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0
Just use nouveau.modeset=0
puppy pfix=ram will keep the save from being used even after you shutdown and make a save.
Need to be booted using a save.

About sfs's not loading.
You are using menu->Setup->SFS-load-on-the-fly to load them?
The devx and kernel sources sfs's are located in /mnt/home location in the Tahrpup file system?

Tahrpup has Quickpet (icon on desktop)
Quickpet->Info->Tahrpup updates
Maybe something in the update will help with sfs load problem.

Do not use a save that was made before you started to boot using nouveau.modeset=0 and got to a good working graphics desktop.

You have done this:
If you are booting using puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0
Just use nouveau.modeset=0
puppy pfix=ram will keep the save from being used.

Are you saying, just using nouveau.modeset=0 the graphics are scrambled?

If yes.

What boot loader are you using to boot Tahrpup?
Have you edited it's config file?

Have you edited the boot loader entry that boots Tahrpup and added the nouveau.modeset=0 to the end of the kernel line or append line?

I boot on a CD-ROM where I burnt a ISO image of Tahrpup64 6.0.5.
I used the most recent save using puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0. I actually only have saves that use the pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0.
You have done this:
If you are booting using puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0
Just use nouveau.modeset=0
puppy pfix=ram will keep the save from being used.
Yes I understand. The only way I can boot Tahrpup64 with good graphics is using the pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0.
Are you saying, just using nouveau.modeset=0 the graphics are scrambled?
No it's to other way around. Graphics work only with nouveau.modeset=0.

The only way I can boot Tahrpup64 with good graphics is using the pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0.
If you use pfix=ram that is suppose to tell the boot process to not use any save.
If you only use nouveau.modeset=0
The boot process will use any save it finds that is a save for Tahrpup.
If that save is messed up, it could mess up graphics.

The nouveau driver in Tahrpup is really an old one.

I wonder if Xenialpup or Bionicpup would just boot better.
They have a much newer improved nouveau driver and graphics support files.
I think they will run on this computer.

For CD booting.
The CD drive has to be working 100%
If not, booting problems are all over the place.

Booting from a install on a USB stick would be better.
You can make edits to the boot loader config file, if you still need nouveau.modeset=0 to boot.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
