Can't connect to Internet wirelessly (Solved)

#1 Post by LeithR »

I'm setting up a Dell 1545 laptop with a copy of Slacko-6.9.6.7, Slacko 6.9.9.9. wont work for some reason. Anyway, The OS loads up perfectly but when I try to connect to the wireless LAN it fails, the OS is clearly seeing the card in that is shows its driver as B43 Broadcom, it just won't connect to the internet. It works perfectly on an Ethernet wired connection. I've tested the WLAN card type DW1397 on another machine and it is happy connecting to the internet.

Its possible that its the motherboard that is at fault but I'm not sure about that.

Are there any known problems with this version of Slacko and wireless communications?

DELL and B43 are the problem. Slacko

#5 Post by hamoudoudou »

DELL and B43 are the problem. Slacko is not guilty.
I had two Dell in the past : Latitude D505 and D630.. Ethernet was the solution. Wireless was broke after ten minutes.
So Dell has not improved anything; still using garbled B43 ? :?:

LeithR, run "dmesg" in a terminal, then create a new paste here and leave us the link.

An "lsmod" dump would be helpful as well.

I've done that its titled "dmesg dump from Slacko-6.9.6.7" from LeithR

And the lsmod is there now as well "lsmod from Slacko-6.9.6.7"

Thanks for the challenge, I didn't know about these aspects, interesting.

:P That's not how this challenge works.

It's paste, then submit.

In the opening seconds "paste added to database" is returned, then the final page of your post.

We want the URL that's now in the address bar.

Because we're not all running Slacko, "uname -r" tells us your kernel version.

The kernel # is 3.16.43
pastebin - LeithR - post number 4001627 is the one for dmesg https://pastebin.ca/4001627

and - pastebin - LeithR - post number 4001631 is the one for lsmod https://pastebin.ca/4001631

hope I've got that right.

I've read on ubuntu site that B43 driver needs firmware installed in
/lib/firmware folder. I would check in firmware folder of a version of linux that works with wireless.

Hi Don,
There's 117 files in the lib/firmware/b43 folder all have the term initvals in their title. How is it possible to determine how they interact with wireless?

LeithR, try blacklisting (Boot Manager) your "bcma" module and reboot. Post back with your findings.

In addition, please confirm for us that there's no physical switch for this device.

When I read your dmesg log I see that it wants to use the driver,
but there appears to be a problem with software turning off radio ....

It says 'Press the button to turn it on' but I don't see a button.

It also says to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/55-cups.rules:5 file ???

@don570,
Here's the contents of 55-cups.rules

# created by Patriot
# Module loading rules for lpt & usb printers
# 20110311 fixed lp[0-15] changed to lp[0-9]
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="lp[0-9]*", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", NAME="usb/%k", MODE="0666"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="lp[0-7]*", SUBSYSTEM=="printer", NAME="%k", MODE="0666"

I can't see a button on the device DW1397 as per your picture.

@matchpoint,
I've blacklisted bcma module and rebooted, nothing obviously different.

The button referred to isn't on the wifi card, it would be a hardware block on the laptop. My Dell laptop which is a later model has a switch on the left hand side. Doing an internet search, appears to indicate that under windows function key 'F2', may switch the Hard Block On/Off on your model. I don't know how this would work in slacko.

To determine if it is Hard Blocked. In a terminal:

Code: Select all

 rfkill list all

There is a utility 'rfkill' available if slacko hasn't installed it.
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/use ... ion/rfkill

__________________________________________________
Given that at times some RF devices do not have hardware rfkill buttons rfkill the Linux kernel also exposes software rfkill capabilities that allows userspace to mimic a hardware rfkill event and turn on or off RF.

@terry,
You may have identified the issue, ran rfkill list and got
soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
clicking on F2 switches the Hard blocked to no

Just tried to connect on wlan and it worked.

Many thanks to all who helped. Simple fix, I love it!

I didn't have much invested in this laptop, I took it from a recycling centre where it had been thrown away!
