No, no particular reason for me to install a login manager. You mentioned it in your last post to me and I thought I would try it out just to make the login screen a little prettier.

that one is not a big deal I just figured I'd report back since you mentioned trying it.

thanks fred.

Fred, thank you so much for your script. It did work as expected. Ultimately I ended up using quantumbox's solution which just seems a little cleaner. With the script for launch and close I would see chrome show on the taskbar and then disappear as X is starting. I tried reducing the time limit but then chrome didnt seem to get started and it did not reduce the startup time for chrome and thereby stopping its intended function. quantums solution seems to be working nicely.

thanks for telling me how to setup the password. i got the working. i tried to install lightdm from synaptic but it did not work. i didnt have time to play around with it trying to get it to work, but after the install it didnt work.

thanks so much.

if anyone else reads this and can help me get my dual monitor situation working i'd love the help!!!

thanks again.

I have same problem when install just lightdm, then I experimenting by install some related lightdm package like lightdm-gtk-greater, lightdm-gtk-greater-settings, lightdm-settings, lightdm-autologin-greeter then reboot and it works. Delete or renane /root/.profile to remove error message

Hello.

1) downloaded bionicdog 2018-06-04 32 bit iso

2) extracted contents to hd(0,2) /bionic/

3) added item to menu.lst in hd(0,0) as per instructions in example boot codes text file:

title BionicDog
root (hd0,2)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz noauto from=/bionic/ changes=/casper/
initrd /casper/initrd1.xz

got the attached error message:

Copy the ENTIRE casper folder into the bionic folder, not the individual files.

Then your menu.lst should be:
Code:
title BionicDog
root (hd0,2)
kernel /bionic/casper/vmlinuz noauto from=/bionic changes=/bionic
initrd /bionic/casper/initrd1.xz

Hi Ether,
I see it's already answered (thanks rcrsn51)
Can't understand, btw, (looking at your screenshot) that it's looking for wheezy .sgn file Question Rolling Eyes
EDIT: Should be "bionic-i486.sgn", maybe you included the wrong initrd1.xz in your install ?

@ALL,
Found a bug in BionicDog:
The Firefox included can update itself, but after updating to the latest version it doesn't start.
This can be solved by installing "libatomic1" package:
Code:
apt-get install libatomic1

Or install from Synaptic.

Added to Changes and fixes ( 3) )
EDIT: Already earlier mentioned Here that the included wex (screencast application) doesn't work, to fix, upgrade wex.
added also to "Changes and fixes" ( 4) )

Fred

I made the suggested changes to the menu.lst item and it booted error-free. Took it for a short test drive and it works very well. Thanks for doing this.

I think I know now why I got the wheezy message:

1) I already had a /casper folder in hd(0,2) from years ago

2) So I extracted the bionicdog iso to /bionic/casper/ (see attached screenshot)

3) I followed the "Examples-boot-codes.txt" instructions exactly as worded:

Quote:
For example if folder /casper is inside folder /bionic you need to use from=/bionic/

...but apparently additional changes are needed as you guys explained (maybe that's obvious to developers but not me).

So when I booted, it must have looked in the /casper folder instead of the /bionic/casper folder.

I've decided to try weaning myself from Windows OS on my desktop machine. The old versions are no longer safe to use, and the new ones are just too bloated for my slow internet connection and low-end hardware.

So thanks for continuing the "dog" project. Great work.

Oh, one more thing: I added bionicdog iso to my YUMI multi-boot USB and it won't boot from there. I don't need a resolution for that, but I thought I should report it.

BionicDog 2018-06-04 32bit w/o wireless ISO: no sound when playing YouTube videos.

Is this a known bug, and is there a fix?

.
Hello.

This thread -- BionicDog (updated: 2018-06-04) -- has 744 posts.

I can't help but believe there's gotta be a way to search all 744 posts to find answers to specific questions...

... but after trying for over an hour I can't figure out how.

I even tried Google but no joy - I want to limit the search to this thread's 744 posts.

With the included Firefox (= package "firefox-apulse"), sound works for me.
Did you install perhaps the Ubuntu "firefox" ? probably that needs pulseaudio installed to have working sound.

There's a little trick that MochiMoppel once advised, adding &ppage=1000 to the url makes it one large page and then you can do a search (Ctrl + f)
So then becomes:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=113210&ppage=1000

The following page will run a custom google search of this Forum, https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=015995643981050743583%3Aabvzbibgzxo&q=#gsc.tab=0. For BionicDog specific searches just include BionicDog as part of the search terms, e.g. BionicDog wireless. Best bookmarked or stored in a text file as it is impossible to memorize.

This search engine provides choices of Puppy related websites beyond this Forum. It is somewhat older. I am not certain all the choices still link to existing websites. http://puppylinux.us/psearch.html

Thanks Fred.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Works great.

I saved the page offline for future searches.

My bad. I forgot to mention that I updated Firefox (from the Ubuntu universe repo). I should have mentioned that in my original question.

Fred wrote:

What's the best way to do that?
Can I simply do apt install pulseaudio?

This is not intended to be snarky or unappreciative, by why wasn't "pulseaudio" included in the ISO? Are there other known missing pieces I should install in order to be more fully binary compatible with Ubuntu Bionic universe repo?

Thanks
