Thinking about the above sentence am I correct in thinking that the ydrv....sfs will remain static and any changes will be contained in the save file?
Yes. The process/method is explained quite clearly in the opening post of the thread you are referring to (I think). A newly created savefile will contain all the savings you have done since creating the ydrv (the latter which contains the contents of your old savefile).

The ydrv ...sfs slowed the boot process too much for my liking so:

I installed to a USB - I wanted that knowledge anyhow - and tried to retrace my actions in the frugal install. When I was happy with the result went back and, after deleting the ydrv...sfs and the save file, rebooted the frugal install.

Made the same changes that I did with the USB install and created a 512MB save file.

So in the short term "happy camper".

Why? Is your system copying all the puppy files into RAM at bootup? You can change this behaviour by specifying pfix=nocopy in the menu.lst file.

Abiword 3-0-4

Works nice so far in Upup-bb, added extra fonts and saved-files from previous version no problem. 'Thanks for this'

Just FYI: It does NOT work when installed in Upup-EE nor does it work with older OS like Vivid-6.5 However... it does install and works properly (as far as I can tell) in de-funked... Upup-DD if anyone still plays with that.

Hi, sszindian.

Sorry if the question sounds stupid, but
what's a "de-funked" Abiword ?

TIA

Considering that we're discussing Abiword, It's something like defenestration, but different.

@musher0

Didn't say that about Abiword... I said ' de-funked... Upup-DD ' (remember, the OS before Upup-EE)

abiword-3.0.4 works in Upup-EE by linking the missing libical.so.2 to libical.so.3.0.5 in the dir > /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu using ROX

or in a terminal:

Code: Select all

cd /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu

ln -s libical.so.3.0.5 libical.so.2

Planning an upgrade

#753 Post by Moose On The Loose »

I have a desktop machine and an EEEPC at 600MHZ
Other than speed and resolution, I have them setup identically.
This is with Puppy 528 on both.
I now want to migrate to something new.

Here are the things I have and use.
If any are not going to work for me then I may have to look for another path.
Anyone who has had serious trouble, please let me know
I am looking for warnings of it not working.

Web browser
Libre-office
gnumaric
LTSpice via wine
ExpressPCB and ExpressSCH via wine
gimp
avidemux
audacity
QCAD community addition 2.0.5.0 (compiled by me) Drafting program DXF format
Geany for writing code
SAMBA that works (there is a history)
Octave (I intend to compile sources)
gnuplot
FreePascal
XBill the game (I'm OK with not having this but ideally)
DOSEMU (I have my own modified source code)
The Puppy Basic-3 I posted about elsewhere
VirtualBox
Stellarium
Kicad
(Something that does direct access to hardware printer port)
icarus Verilog compiler
Lincity (Game)
ngspice
(Something that uses /dev/dsp to make signals)
timidity or other midi player
Some web server
Xdialog
dialog
gtkdiclog3 or better

Are any of these a "hard no" on BionicPup32?

For anybody that uses LUKS or was thinking of trying LUKS (Linux Unified Key System) encryption, jafadmin has created a gui that launches from the utility menu. Works nice and easy, no need for the terminal at all :)
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=117915

LUKS is similair to the old Truecrypt disk encryption utility.
Bionic already has the LUKS program built-in, its now much easier to use with the gui.

Installed how?
All specific details.
To what?

I assume it boots and runs OK from the USB install.
I will guess.
You installed to the computers internal drive.
Are you booting with no USB drive plugged in?

If that is as far as the boot process got to.
I would completely delete the install and try again.
Installs do not get correctly done. sometimes, for several different reasons.
But the answers to the above questions could give a clue as to why it stopped.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I am trying to get freecell running on BionicPup but no joy.

Code: Select all

# freecell
Error in startup script: extra characters after close-brace
    while executing
"variable WinRegToISO639 [dict create  {expand}{
        01 ar 0401 ar_SA 0801 ar_IQ 0c01 ar_EG 1001 ar_LY 1401 ar_DZ
              1801 ar_MA 1c01 ar_..."
(in namespace eval "::msgcat" script line 17)
    invoked from within
"namespace eval msgcat {
namespace export mc mcload mclocale mcmax mcmset mcpreferences mcset \
	    mcunknown

    # Records the current locale as..."
    (file "/usr/lib/tcl8.5/msgcat1.4/msgcat.tcl" line 20)
    invoked from within
"source /usr/lib/tcl8.5/msgcat1.4/msgcat.tcl"
    ("package ifneeded msgcat 1.4.1" script)
    invoked from within
"package require msgcat"
    (file "/usr/bin/freecell" line 4109)
It has worked on 3.01, 4.31, 5.2.8, 5.7.1 and Pup stretch 7.0.0a.

Any ideas?

Hi Mercedes350se!
Forum member muggins posted the tcl_tk_games.sfs in this post
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 130#682130
It includes the Freecell game (and lots of other games for anyone else wondering)
Read that post for a complete list of games in the SFS, I am not a gamer but its worth having just to take a stroll down memory lane :)
All the games seem to work fine in this BionicPup32
Picked up that SFS a couple years back when we were discussing MUT :)
