however I cannot help you with the WEP, just too paranoid for my liking. It never seems to work for me... windows or Linux, so I took the easy way out

Your solution sounds crazy ... maybe there's a hardware conflict between the (PCI) wifi device and your PCMCIA controller.
I suggest you read _Puppy2_wireless_README.txt from http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Wifi/drivers- ... -and-2.01/
There is a section about resetting the PCMCIA interface which might have a similar, or better, result.
WEP is no problem. It can be set with the standard "iwconfig" utility.
