keyboard is confused

I selected us-qwerty and have key translation errors.
Pressing 'y' displays 'z'. Press 'z' to get 'y'.
None of my password entries validate and, of course, I can't see what is being entered.
The keyboard is not usb.
I have everywhere with Linux, but never had a problem like this one.
Can you help?

Rebooted, skipped keyboard selection in 'setup'. Now all appears ok.
