Unable to select BBC website for desktop

#1 Post by NETTKNUT »

This problem may be specific to the UK only. When I try to log on to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news I should get the desktop website but I am getting the corresponding mobile website (m.bbc.co.uk/news). Is there a setting somewhere to ensure my machine does not switch itself to mobile sites automatically? I am running slacko 5.3 on a very old (2001) 660Mz machine with maximum RAM. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Try the following:

BBC NEWS HOME: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

BBC NEWS, UK: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk/

BBC NEWS, ENGLAND: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/

BBC NEWS, WORLD: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/

Works for me.

Just tried it in my browser (FF) on Lighthouse64. I am not getting a redirect as you show. when I enter ONLY "www.bbc.co.uk/news/" it ONLY goes to "http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/" showing in URL area.

Could you be getting to the internet via a USB dongle over the Cell Network or via a tether to your cell phone? I am NO expert on browser actions, but if not, you may want to try it from another PC or PUP distro or browser. If the results are the same, then I would consider posing this question to your ISP.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all your replies. I found at the very bottom of the BBC home page a link marked 'desktop'; clicking on this switched my machine to the desktop mode.

NETTKNUT, Good to know the problem is resolved. Can you please edit the original header adding 'Solved' to the title.
When I access the BBC Home page via a desktop PC, and look to the lower right-hand side, it say's "Mobile". Even clicking on it still gives the original page and images. So, if you don't mind, and for the benefit of anyone else who happens to read this page; can you please clarify how you are connecting to the Internet: are you using a dongle (3 or 4G type device) or tethering via a mobile phone?

Thanks for the reply. My connection to the web is a conventional one via my incoming telephone line using a splitter to connect my broadband modem. I think the BBC have mobile sites only for a limited number of their web pages such as bbc news. If you have clicked on "mobile" this may be why nothing happens. I can't help much beyond that a I have just my desktop machine and no other devices such as mobile phones etc. It's just a question of 'suck it and see'. I did send a query to the BBC but got no reply although I think they should put this problem in their FAQs - I did not find that they were not very helpful.
