I'm using Xenialpup64 7.5, and I can't seem to get wine to work. I've downloaded and installed seven packages called wine from the PPM, and bash still tells me "wine: command not found". Am I downloading the wrong packages or something?

Hi, Saladin.

You sound as though you're having exactly the same problem as davids45 was a few days ago. See this thread, and specific post, here:-

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=1001410#1001410

I've just recently installed Xenial64 7.5 myself, and installing WINE is one of the very first things I always do. For me, it's a 'must-have'.

Don't bother trying to install WINE64 from the PPM; it's an absolute flamin' nightmare to get working. Uninstall all the stuff you've installed with the PPM, then follow the steps I outlined:-

1.) First, install the 32-bit_compat_libs SFS, from Quickpet.
2.) Before you do anything else, run

Code:
ldconfig

...in the terminal, and wait for the prompt to return. This ensures that the 32-bit compatibility libs are all set up correctly. That's a small 'L', BTW, not a '1'.)
3.) Next, install the version of WINE offered in Quickpet. This is a 32-bit version (2.02), but it'll work just fine.
4.) Lastly, download & install the Wine-CFG MenuEntry .pet I've provided at the bottom of this post. When you click on this for the first time, it sets up the WINE 'environment' in the /root/.wine directory. Accept, and let it install, Mono & Gecko. Nothing'll work properly without these two.

On second and subsequent uses, Wine-CFG will access the WINE 'control panel'.

Now, you should be ready to 'install' your Windows apps.....

Let us know how you get on with all that, please. If you follow those instructions, in that order, you should then be 'sorted'.

Hope that helps.

Well, I started with installing 32bit_compatibility_libs_xenial64.sfs, but bash is telling me that ld is not found.

It needs to be entered as:
Code:
ldconfig

As a single word.
No spaces.

Also, in Wine config->Drivers Select autodetect to get all the driver locations loaded in Wine.

A lot of setup options in Wine config, so check them all.

What version of Windows you want Wine to mimic can affect how a program runs. Wine Config->Applications.

Ah. Thanks for that, bigpup. My bad, in this case; I know Mikeslr has mentioned this a couple of times in recent threads, but rather than hunt 'em up, I attempted to do things from memory. Rolling Eyes

The old grey matter's not as good as it used to be, these days... Embarassed

Apologies for the 'red herring', Saladin. Code quote now fixed.

Thank you both! That seems to have done it. Wine is working now.

Enjoy!

PostPosted: Tue 14 Aug 2018, 19:19    Post subject: Hoping now for wine success in xenial64

G'day,

Glad to read how to fix wine in xenial64. I've got it running in my slacko64s but it is stuck resolutely in my xenial64s (and also tahr64s). Stuck Windows can be so annoying Mad .

An earlier post of Mike W.'s (in his above linked thread) did not work for me but now I'm hoping the "ld" thing is fixed (thanks the 'other' Mike).

I'm not sure if one can edit quotes in a post but if Mike W. wants to edit the 'ld config' to 'ldconfig' in this thread, and has time on his hands, would he like to edit the 'ldd config' to 'ldconfig' in his post in that other thread Very Happy ?

Happy days.

David S.

Certainly can. I've been doing so for years.

Your wish is my command, David. Done.

(And it's less confusing for anyone reading the thread later..!)
