Hello watchdog.

I don't know for other countries or for other fields, but in Canada there is a
reliable main organization that collects royalties for songs and film music
that are played in theatres and radio stations, etc., and sends the composer
a royalty cheque once a year if his music has been played during that year.

By law, Canadian radio stations and movie theatres have to keep logs of
what music has been played at what time, and the royalties are based on
those logs. The radio station pays the royalties to the royalties organization
and then the royalties for song X are sent to the composer by the royalties
organization. It keeps I think 1% for administration fees.

Mutatis mutandis, I think that is what the EU is trying to do.

The large Internet content providers are getting nervous because they will
incur extra cost to set up a similar infrastructure, that's all.

This "freedom rhetoric" is about money, don't be fooled. With this law, the
little guys (the original artists and authors) will finally get their due, and the
billionaire companies of the Internet do not like it, because it will mean less
profit for them.

BFN.

On 2019 there will be European election day. The real intent of the Copyright directive is to stop freedom of speech in internet and social media that support populist forces causing phenomenon such as the election of Trump in America or the Political Parties which won the past Italian election. It's a continuation of the fake-news war declared by Hillary Clinton. Soros (=deep state) said that Facebook and social media will be stopped by regulatory laws and taxes. The elite has fear of social media and user generated contents. In the future nobody will be able to upload anything without being stopped for Copyright laws. The European Parlament could write the directive in other manner to prevent this use. We are not discussing of right of artists to be paid. It's a trick to stop freedom of speech on social media and user generated contents for free.

We have something similar called GEMA.

This organization makes it possible to force a band to pay the fees used for the royalties, even if this band plays own compositions only and is not a member of GEMA.

A criminal union under state protection!

Just like the former GEZ (they got a new name by now) which is for the German Government's TV Stations - everyone has to pay. No matter if he/she is watching or not. No matter even if you own a TV or not.

Allô, RSH.

We have never heard of horror stories in Canada related to SOCAN,
our royalties organization. They are quite reliable.

But lots of terror stories (e.g. broken legs, jaws and fingers...) are told
about the Musicians' Guild
url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_ ... _Musicians[/url],
which is not even a Canadian entity, but rules the popular music scene
(shows in bars and on stage) in Canada.

@watchdog:
You political opinions are your own. I will not discuss them.

But... if you play a movie without paying the rights in the form
of rental from a library or store, or otherwise, you owe the artists. Period.

Politics and the artist's right to earn an income from his/her work are
two different things.

The roof of your car in the UK might be appropriate.
Our local council has tried several times to put CCTV cameras on some telegraph poles in strategic locations.
It is amazing how quickly they get damaged, and none of the people ever see it it happening.
