Has anyone been successful installing Zoom in Tahrpup64 6.0.5?

Maybe it's time I should upgrade this old laptop to Tarhpup64 6.0.6.

lib-xcbimage.so.0 is missing according to running in terminal
/opt/zoom/zoom.

Run from terminal till you have all libs installed.

I set up tahr64 like you and got this. Good luck.

@ d4rkn1ght:-

I doubt it would make much difference, TBH. AFAIK, the biggest differences between 605 and 606 related mainly to being constructed under the newer Woof-CE build-system.....that, and the inclusion of the 'efi' stuff to enable compatibility with newer mobos, hardware, etc.

The glibc is still the same; ditto, dependencies. The kernel is a little bit newer, but it's still a 3-series.....from whence I suspect a lot of the issues arise. That, and the fact that Tahr is now EOL, and has been for about a year. I wouldn't like to say just how much longer stuff will be available from the repos, though Precise surprised all of us, with its repos still being 'on-line' nearly 3 years after it went EOL....

(I tried setting-up Tahr64 on this new HP Pavilion 'mini-tower' a little while back. As expected, certain items simply didn't function, chief amongst which was the audio. Not really very surprising, given that there's no way that Tahr's kernel could know about a sound card that wasn't built till nearly 4 years after it was published..!)

I got around that issue by transplanting Xenial64's kernel. So, if you're going to try 606, I'd recommend upgrading to Xenialpup64's k4.9.58 kernel. It seems to function fine, and I believe it's an LTS version anyway.

In all honesty, if the laptop will run Tahr64, you may as well try Xenial64 first, before trying Tahr64 606.....and Zoom runs fine under that.

Just my two-penn'orth, FWIW.

I did that, after downloading step's SFS of the zoom software, and putting it into the home directory of a newly installed BionicPup64.

Starts up fine.

But maybe someone can help with the below (I have never before used any teleconferencing software, and the 'meeting' is tomorrow.)

I'm using this Dell laptop E6410.

Maybe it doesn't have a functioning camera? Drivers? Firmware?

Is there a way to test the zoom on some 'meeting' designed as a test thing?

work.

The webcam was optional on the Dell Latitude E6410, so you may not have one. If you do have one, it is located just above the screen in the center of the lid and looks like a little square with a circle in it.

I have never had any problem with drivers for the built in webcam on a Dell. Zoom should automatically detect the webcam (if it is there).

Thanks for explaining Tahr 6.0.6 last update. I thought it was major update.

I have several old laptops running Tahr, Xenial and Bionic. I just wanted to see if I could run zoom. It's not really that important.

Thanks

Not meeting as a test, but if you go into the Settings > Video you can check if your camera works or not (black screen = not)

Thanks, Fred; black screen is what I see on this Dell E6410 laptop. Don't remember whether that was with all Puppys..

On this E6410, there is the little square with a circle in it, but PupSysinfo does not find a webcam.

EDIT: Ah, on an Inspiron, PupSysinfo DOES find a webcam. and Zoom works OK.

Thanks again to everyone.

Xenialpup64 7.5 Zoom Working

#53 Post by MrDuckGuy »

I'm running Xenialpup64 7.5 on an Intel CORE I5 based computer with 8GB of RAM.

We had a family meeting today for Mother's Day.
The Zoom conference details were emailed to me.

I ran the website version from Google Chrome, and it works but it kept crashing. I then tried to use both my landline telephone for the audio (that's actually an option) and the website for the video. It worked as well, but still periodically crashed and I had to refresh the web page to get it back.

I tried to log on to it in Pale Moon, which worked but could not access the camera in my computer. So because of the crashing issues, with the conference in progress, I downloaded the Debian file from the Zoom website.

It downloaded and installed in less than five minutes and I was able to log back into the conference without any difficulty at all. My old "window" from the Chrome browser was still active (without video). I had both audio and video and the program ran for about an hour or more without any crashing and almost no freezing. It took me a while to figure out that my inactive window wouldn't close because I had forgotten to simply hang up my landline telephone.

In any case, I suspect the crashing in Google Chrome may be due to my RAM, but I'm just posting this to affirm that Zoom is now pretty seemless to install in the Xenialpup64v7.5 OS as things stand, as of this date, at least from my personal experience.

Image

Good luck to all and please stay safe.

@ MrDuckGuy:-

I'm curious. Clue me in, willya?

When you say that you think Zoom crashing in Google Chrome is due to your RAM, umm.....care to elaborate? You mean there's not enough of it, or.....what?

Yes. I think my hardware can accept twice the RAM I have now.
According to Htop I'm now using "only" about 5.1GB of available memory,
and my swap file is basically empty. I'm just guessing at this though, all I
know is that the dedicated program didn't crash once and the
Google-chrome window crashed continually.

Thanks for the feedback. בס״ד

I don't doubt that your hardware will accept twice your current RAM; much modern hardware will happily accept up to 32 GB nowadays.

But I'm gobsmacked. What on earth are you doing with Puppy that's using that much blasted RAM, hmm? Over 5 GB?? Huh???

Had ya gob. I got my mother an old Optiplex like I have and put 12GB of ram in it,
and now it never freezes like it did before. This computer is of similar age and specifications,
and it locks up periodically (in fact it did it this morning).

Both computers are running frugal installations of Xenialpup64v7.5.

So even if Htop doesn't say it is using all that RAM, in actual practice, the RAM,
even if it's not being "used," just sits there and yells at the rest of the computer,
telling it not to freeze up on people?

Hah! Touché.... (*Ouch!*)

That's certainly one interpretation. Though I still don't quite see why it freezes up periodically.....especially if you DO have that much RAM to play with. I can't help thinking something's not configured correctly, but that's as far as I can go with that train of thought.

Well, if it works for ya.....carry on!

For a 32 bit Puppy that will run recent versions of Chromium or Chrome, a workaround is to run Zoom from a website. You can start a meeting if you have a Zoom account, which you will need to log into, and then you can start or join a meeting. (You probably can join a meeting without logging in -- I haven't tried that.) You won't have all the controls you would get with the Zoom software installed, e.g., adjusting your camera, testing your volume, but not too bad for most uses.

As for testing your setup, just start a meeting and see if your audio and video appear to be working OK. You could also join the meeting you started from another device such a cell phone, and talk to yourself for a while.

I know some of this was covered earlier in the thread but wanted to give a synopsis.

Zoom - video chat software

#60 Post by Sky Aisling »

Hi Zooming Puppies,

How do I update Zoom in FatDog?
Zoom wouldn't let me join my monthly meeting tonight.
It says I must update to 5.0 Zoom.
I choose Debian from the list of Linux types.
It downloads the same Zoom version 8.0 that I took back in March.
I am assuming that I go to FatDog site for answer?

Thanks,
Sky
