Updated Firefox via PPM in Slacko, but still the old version

Hi everybody!I need your help to update firefox via the PPM.Currently i have installed puppy slacko 6.9.9.The installation is frugal.I update ocasionaly the PPM so i found that there is a newer version of firefox.Currently i use version 52 of firefox and the current version in the PPM is 60.2.I tried to update firefox by choosing the proper package the installation proccess started the way it should but when i lauched firefox the version was again 52 :( Any idea would be very appreciated i wonder what am i doing wrong?Have a nice day everyone.

Why don't you update it using its own update procedures which are independent of the OS???

Thank you for your interest.The version is Extended Support Release and by default the procedure you mentioned is impossible.Sorry :(

Are you sure?? Have you set the release channel in the config file??

The Firefox that comes in Slacko is the Firefox ESR

It is not the normal release of Firefox.

This is how to update it.
Some info on getting Firefox esr updated.

Run menu->Setup->Update notices
If it lists a new version of Firefox esr.
Run PPM (Puppy Package Manager)
Update PPM data base.
Search in PPM for Firefox esr named in the Update notices.
Download and install.

Firefox esr now updated to that version.

Firefox esr->Help->Check for updates does not work.

There is also the normal release of Firefox. A completely different version of Firefox from the ESR version.
That Firefox 60.2.1 is the normal Firefox.

If you download and install it.
It is going to be a completely different Firefox.
Getting it from PPM, it probably is not going to have a menu entry or change the desktop browser icon.
Look in /opt directory and see if it has a Firefox directory. All of this Firefox is in that Firefox directory.
Clicking on the firefox file should run it.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thank you big pup for your interest.I have managed to find and install a .pet package of firefox in my native language from this thread in our forum.This firefox version is able to upgrade to the latest because i used this package on a previous version of slacko.I found the application icon in /usr/share/applications/ directory but when i click on it i get this message:

Failed to execute child process /usr/share/applications/firefox No such file or directory.

I tried to adjust the symlink of firefox in /usr/bin/ properly so that it is linked to the proper path of the new version of firefox but the problem persists.Any idea?Did i do something the wrong way?

Did you first uninstall the version of Firefox you got from PPM?
Then install the pet of Firefox?

In PPM, uninstall any Firefox you see listed in the uninstall.

Now install the Firefox pet.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:

Does this mean that firefox is upgraded but the version number remains the same when i click on Help-->About Firefox?I searched in the package manager and i saw that firefox 60.2 esr is already installed after the proccess i followed in the quote above.Thanks in advance. :)

Did you first do this:
In PPM, uninstall any Firefox you see listed in the uninstall.

Probably good idea to reboot after uninstalling.

Now Slacko should be back to only having the Firefox that originally comes with Slacko.

Now try the above steps to install the update to Firefox ESR.

Again, reboot to make sure the new install is saved in the save.

This new version of Firefox ESR.
Try starting Firefox from the menu>Internet

I have good news!I managed to update firefox by visiting the slackware package search engine downloaded firefox installed it and voila by deafault firefox started with the new upgraded version.Of course first of all i did what big pup mentioned on the post above.Thank you big pup for your interest. 8)
