Updated PPM and installed favorite applications.
Connected to a 32" TV via hdmi cable, sound also via hdmi.

CPU usage is high when streaming video in Kodi or VLC, much higher than
Quirky Beaver 8.7.1

Works well apart from that.
Thanks.

running Quirky 8.7.1 beaver64.

Upgrade -- problem with old SaveFile

#142 Post by mikeslr »

Hi 666philb & All,

I had been using 7.9.3 with a SaveFile. Replaced with 7.9.5. On bootup was asked if I wanted to use the old SaveFile. Answered yes. Most of the desktop customization's didn't survive the upgrade, but most were easily restored. However, JWM's 2nd panel no longer appeared and nothing I did restored it to its old position --left-center-- or enabled me to view a 2nd panel in any position.

The GUI worked. Launchers could be added. But nothing appeared.

As I don't like desktop launchers, and make use of the second panel for quick access to applications, I had been rather pleased with JWM's second panel. Rather than rebuilding the SaveFile from scratch, I installed FbBox, which functions.

Regarding CPU/MEM in an "all intel" machine, I see lower CPU in Bionic and higher MEM when playing video but this may be due to VLC vs MPV (pic)

For those with broadcom wifi troubles, here is the wl driver (md5sum:2c030de248e7172aa702b0d3a8117cb)

Bionicpup64 7.9.5 beta

#145 Post by ETP »

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the above which I am just starting to test using a manual install from the mounted ISO
to a 3 partition 16GB USB-3 stick [ fat32/fat32/f2fs ]
An initial finding was that my 4GB swap partition on sdb18 was not being mounted.
That is due to the fact that fdisk is no longer in the Busybox suite and needs to be installed separately.
BK also ran into this issue with Quirky Beaver 8.7.1 and commented about it here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 84#1005484

Installing it via (updated) PPM resolved the issue but it needs to be included in the next version.
Items installed thus far:
  • /root/.packages/user-installed-packages

flashplayer-31.0.0.108-x86_64|Adobe Flash Player browser plugin and Preferences
    GetLatest64bitChromeVersion-MK11|Google Chrome web browser
lockstate-1.5-x86_64_ETP|CapsLock, NumLock, ScrollLock tray indicator app
    google-chrome-stable_current_amd64|Access the Internet
    fdisk_2.31.1|collection of partitioning utilities
PaleMoon was updated to 28.1.0

Bionicpup64 7.9.5 beta

Hi again Phil,

In the current woof-installed version of hardinfo:

( hardinfo-5.2-i18n-x86_64_bionic|hardinfo|5.2-i18n-x86_64_bionic||System|916||hardinfo-5.2-i18n-x86_64_bionic.pet|+gtk+2|System Profiler and Benchmark|ubuntu|bionic||)

sensors information is not populated. The fix if that feature is desired, is to use PPM to install the current bionic version over the top:
  • /root/.packages/user-installed-packages

flashplayer-31.0.0.108-x86_64|Adobe Flash Player browser plugin and Preferences
    GetLatest64bitChromeVersion-MK11|Google Chrome web browser
lockstate-1.5-x86_64_ETP|CapsLock, NumLock, ScrollLock tray indicator app
    google-chrome-stable_current_amd64|Access the Internet

ETP, thanks! I will look into the hardinfo, etc.

I too have a manual install, on a 128GB SSD in this Dell E6410.

Looking forward to using it some more.

And of course, BIG thanks to 666philb!

Checking in PPM for hardinfo, there are 2 versions currently shown as included in the release. I would like to get the sensors displayed, however using PPM was unable to find the 0.6 version that you have displayed, which you installed.

Code: Select all

In /root/.packages/woof-installed-packages:

well with Intel (cpu usage is high)

Thanks.

@Terry H,

In PPM you are looking for the Ubuntu ref which is what I highlighted in blue i.e. hardinfo_0.5.1+git20180227-1|Displays system information

Installing that will give you the 0.6-alpha version of hardinfo from 2017.

The problem was that both versions had [ALREADY INSTALLED] against them when I first went into PPM. I have since installed the above version. Sensors now appears in hardinfo.

Changed kernel, added "intel_pstate=disable" to the kernel line of the

Updated PPM and installed favorite applications.

Changing the kernel resulted in less CPU usage, maybe Phil needs to
offer an alternative kernel for computers with intel graphics?

Thanks.

Text wrapping in rox-filer columns

#154 Post by Terry H »

This version of bionic64 7.9.5 uses woodenshoe-wi Version 10 of rox filer. I am currently having an issue when in detailed view. On initial view the columns are displayed smaller with text wrapped. Enlarging the window and manually expanding columns leaves the text still wrapped. Changes to options doesn't alter this behaviour.

:( I only made a one line change between version 9 and version 10 to fix a segfault when running with old libraries.

But since Bionicpup64 does not use old libraries, going back to version 9 until I can figure out what is wrong should fix it.

Hi Phil,

A minor issue is that the included mpv GUI does not launch centre screen.
That may be resolved by the inclusion of the attached conf file who's contents are reproduced below.
(It also ensures the correct selection of sub-title language when appopriate & sets the screenshot directory)

Code: Select all

# This file (mpv.conf) goes in ~/.config/mpv/
# Revised 27th June 2018 to include slang and screenshot-directory (Needed in some Pups when root is not automaticaly used) - ETP
# Additional notes:
#
# --no-border is used within launch scripts. eg /usr/bin/mpv --no-border [url or path to file/script]
# To quit the TV press keyboard letter q
# To resume later at the same position when viewing a film or video, use instead keyboard letter Q (Upper case)
# To toggle between windowed & full-screen mode press keyboard letter f
# Use numbers 0 (up) and 9 (down) across the top of the keyboard to adjust volume.
# To take a screenshot press keyboard letter s
# Toggle visibility of subtitles (when available) with keyboard letter v
# To pause or resume play use keyboard letter p or the space bar.
#
geometry=50%:50%
slang=$LANG
screenshot-directory=/root/my-documents/images/
