Sounds scary but works great OOTB. I had to click away 3 of those "Insecure site" dialogs but then VLC streamed the YT URL.
Thanks!

As an additional bonus I expect that videos streamed this way are free of nagging commercials. I still have to see but if so then this method would be an interesting option even for users of a modern browser.

I get none of these dialog errors you are talking about. Just works. Why would you get commercials, these are direct download links for the video on the server? Doesn't make sense to me.

Hi !
Think youtube changed some code.....so could no longer stream youtube vids with Vlc .
What works for me is the newest Version of Smplayer/Smtube .

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... &start=135

If you install an Addon for Palemoon or Firefox called "Open with" configure it to play Youtube ( and some other sites ) Video/Links directly with a right click Mouse-Menu on the (appropriate ) Youtube site to play with Smplayer instead of Flash-Player .
For Palemoon 27.x.x you have to install Open with Version 5.6.3.1
cause newer Versions maybe do not install .....but not sure for Palemoon 28.1.
Have a look here for Palemoon (not sure if it also works for Firefox ) :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... 3.1-signed

For Firefox :
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/open-with/

Thanks backi, I've set it to open with mpv and works fine.
(needs python though, to complete installation, needs to run a python script)
Open with vlc sort of works also , but video play is stuttering for me.

(sorry, a bit off-topic, I'm not using old browser, new firefox here)

Hi Fred !

This Procedure does not work (for me) any longer with Vlc Player .
Neither in Bionic Dog (Vlc3.01) nor in Xenial Dog (Vlc 2.8 ) nor in Deb Dog Stretch(Vlc 3.0.1).A Few weeks ago Vlc worked flawless til youtube changed the code again. So i am wondering why Vlc-Player still works for you .
But it is not important for me as long Smplayer does work this way ........it is quite handy to stream Youtube Videos (mostly Music) in Background with Smplayer while surfing the Web......and less resource hungry so i think .Prefer Smplayer over Mpv-Player because integrated Equalizer and Extra-Stereo Effect
(in Audio >Filter>Extrastereo ) in Smplayer gives quite a good Soundquality with Headphones .

Regards !

Hi backi, strange... earlier tested on Stretch, now also on Bionic and works with Vlc (but again useless, as I mentioned, because of the stuttering, which probably can be solved somehow ?)
This is with Firefox Quantum.
Did you download and install the open_with_linux.py ?, see screenshot.

Okay, I'll bite. I got smplayer 14.8.1 for tahrpup, installed it with ppm. I opened smplayer and was redirected to smplayer update, where I downloaded smplayer 18.9.0 tar.bz2, and two other related files. I await your directions on how to proceed.

qt 4 is installed by default in Tahrpup
qt 4 webkit and gstreamer available via PPM (see screenshot)

in your case it's sufficient to download SMtube only
for playback you can use VLC ( auto-detected by SMtube)

short test smtube 18.9.0 / vlc 2.1.6 / tahrpup 6.0.5 worked without problems.
But I prefer SMplayer too. ;-)

ah ah ah, you can not do the same with a bike, a car or a plane

I did look now music on youtube with that poor equipment:

- slacko 5.33
- Seamonkey 2.30, the last one with xulrunner, the best...
- libflashplayer.so size 9740 kb (perhaps the most older used by Puppy!)

youtube specimens:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQemvyyJ--g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCYHMVlQezA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-btM54c7xkU

what is the most easy way today to record those videos?

but in the time I ws writing those lines, I was listening this other video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN2SQ4m ... N2SQ4m7M04

see screenshot at the bottom!

I did invoque that url under 2 tabs. the one tab marked with the red point shows the video AND give the sound of the video. the second tab opens only a HTML5 CONTAINER with the old video within (with some other videos in it! It is possible to open only ONE part contained in the container through the index in youtube, but if you invoque the HTML5 CONTAINER it seems only possible if your equipment includes an adequat HTML5 driver!

(if you can't access with my last link and want to test with your browser the same file, search «andre rieux and akim» ! perhaps you can this way...

in my opinion, youtube is perhaps being to pack all old videos in HTML5 containers to make avoid they can be used in a restricted choice of browsers

this way google and youtube can contribute to eliminate a lot of good browser and controll so the access to internet

as I did constate that, I did reinstall LINKS2 and use it now again IN ALL CIRCONSTANCES where I know it is possible an refuse more and more the web pages that contribute to limite the free access to internet for all and in all circonstances...

an adequate tool to add the HTML5 performance to Mozilla seems to exist:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ecommended

but restricted for Firefox only

where is the freedom from Mozilla now!

and the people declaring to be using only free software are really poor and decevant people. please read what mozilla writes on them:
Thanks for browsers and Linux distributions developers who chose to provide the extension build into their products (including GNU IceCat, Trisquel)
it is perverse!

Few weeks old now, I know, but....

Mochi, have you tried this one, from OscarTalks?

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-2.1. ... ps-s14.sfs

That's a direct link to a self-contained package Oscar built of VLC 2.1.0 'Rincewind', put together for the Slackware 14.0-based Slacko Pups.....which includes your Slacko 5.6. This doesn't require any dependencies (all built-in, y'see), and has 'saved my bacon' on more than one occasion...well done, Oscar!

Up to you, of course. It's an SFS, so no need to permanently occupy space in your save-file/folder. I believe it's more than likely the source of greengeek's 2.1.0 'nodeps' .pet; I, too, have 'petted' it for certain Pups in the past!

Mike.

Still looking for a OOTB vlc2 which works with Racy5.5. Have to say that the builtin VLC for Tahr 605 fits like a glove, rock solid.

Hm... Interesting. Why don't try to use another browser? Maybe Chromium can be another good choice. Chromium and Google Chrome are based on same engine, but they are different. Chromium does not have association with Google (I think, correct me if it is wrong)

Another way is using streaming application. I have heard that we can use VLC to stream youtube, but I never do that.

A good site to use if you have problems downloading youtube videos, is: https://www.savethevideo.com/
This site provides an alternative download link on their own servers. Useful if you can't download a specific video due to "forbidden" or other errors/exclusions.
