If you mean downgrading from 2.10 to 2.02, no, it will not work. I know because I've tried it out, mainly because I like breaking stuff

If you mean upgrading 2.02 to 2.10, it works for some people, but not for others. Speaking from my experience, it hosed my system. Did I mention that I like breaking stuff?

So, back up your data, do a fresh install, restore data. Besides, you may enjoy a change of desktop background.

I just upgraded from 2.0.2 to 2.1.0; it was remarkably uneventful. The only extra thing I think is needed is to save the /tmp/versioncleanup directory in a place more permanent, just to be paranoid (because the first time one reboots, this information is cleaned out of /tmp). But the only thing I needed out of there was my kludged modprobe.conf file that I need to keep the wireless happy. At least, that's the only thing I've found a need for, so far.
