Which Puppy for this old hardware?
Need Distro to run old hardware. ASUS A7N8X-X mobo. Athlon XP 3200+ CPU. 3GB RAM. Want to install.Readon 7000 AGP video. Need to run SCSI Scanner. Mint 17.1 Mate 32bit live sessions works, but installation is wonky. Mint 18.1 32bit wont even run live. Is there a puppy for me? I ran an old puppy, man was pretty limited. no man for apropos, xsane. How do get software to run my scanner?
what type of scanner?
for my Canon I found a pretty simple program that runs the scanner pretty well from Canon's website after searching around, maybe there is something for your type as well. Other scan programs would not work with this Canon MG2500 series printer/scanner that came in with Lucid, Raring Tahr and Xenial Puppies

The only way you are going to know what Puppy version will work or be the best one to use, is to try some.
Looking at the processor specs.
This would be a good place to start.
Lucid Puppy 5.2.8.7
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90461
Tahrpup 6.0.5 is the next step up in a newer Puppy version.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=96178
Whatever Puppy you try it will have to be a 32 bit version.
That processor only supports 32 bit.
So you know how to tell what is 32 bit version.
In the name of the Puppy version iso package.
If it has 64 in the name it is 64 bit.
If no 64 in the name it is 32 bit.
Example:
Tahr-6.0.5_PAE.iso is 32 bit Tahrpup 6.0.5
Tahr64-6.0.5.iso is 64 bit Tahrpup 6.0.5
the PAE or noPAE in a iso name is about supporting more than 4 GB of RAM.
PAE supports over 4 GB
noPAE will support up to 4GB
Your computer can use any version, PAE or noPAE.
On some older hardware, noPAE may work better.
This is all about how the Linux kernel is setup for how it supports hardware.
Again only way to know what Puppy works for you is to try some.
The newer the Puppy version the better.
You could start by trying Xenialpup 7.5 (newest official Puppy) and work backwards to an older version of Puppy.
Lucid Puppy is in the middle as far as age of a Puppy version.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

What Kind of Scanner
Epson Expression 636 SCSI scanner. Have always been to run it with xsane. Any puppy work w/xsane?
Xsane has been in all Puppy versions for many years.
It should work in all versions of Puppy.
However, some scanners do require other software.
This is the main Puppy topic about printers and scanners.
About halfway down, in the first topic, talks about scanners.

This is a program you may want to use.

With a few exceptions, recent puppies can do anything which the major distro version to which they are binary compatible can do. With rare exceptions, recent Puppies have been created to be binary compatible with debian, slackware or Ubuntu.
According to the google translation of this webpage, "The radeon driver in Debian 8 "Jessie" supports GPUs from R100 up to Hawaii (Radeon 7000 - Radeon R9 290). See the radeon manual page (4) and the radeon page on the X wiki for more information." https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search. As far as I know there is only one Puppy binary compatible with debian jessie:
Pupjibaro jessie Beta 5, from here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=106259, FYI, on first setup you can choose English.
It is also possible that dpup-stretch --stretch being the debian version after Jessie-- will still contain drivers and firmware for Radeon 7000. You'll find its ISO from here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 590#974590
There are, however, several "DebianDogs" based on Jessie and Stretch. The 'DebianDogs' are pure-debian, built from Debian-Live in a manner so that they will function like Puppies and run well on computers with limited RAM/CPU. You'll find links to the "Dogs" in the Projects Section: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=34
This page may help you figure out which Puppies, binary compatible to Ubuntu will support Radeon 7000. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver. FYI, Xenialpups are binary compatible with Xenial (16.0x), Tahrpup with Trusty Tahr (14.0x) and Lucid/Lupu with Lucid Lynx (12.0x). The concern on that page about not being fully compatible with the Unity desktop is not one shared by Puppies. The recommendation to use a lighter desktop is met by Puppies 'standard' employment of JWM, and alternate use of xfce or lxde.
The foregoing appears to support Bigpup's suggestions: Lucid, Tahrpup and Xenialpup.
Someone more familiar with Slacko Puppies/Slackware and Radeon may be better able to guide you; so I haven't cited any posts. But my overall impression was that the most recent version (Slackware 14.2 and Slacko 700) may not be satisfactory; but earlier versions (Slackware 14.0 and 14.1 /Slacko 5.7 and 600) might be, 'thoug --if I'm not mistaken-- you may have to follow fairly easy instructions to obtain the proprietory radeon driver.
Based on the foregoing --and other considerations-- I'd recommend first trying Tahrpup. Xenialpup, being newer, may not be able to support your version of Radeon out-of-the-box. And unlike Lucid, Tahrpup is still able to run all current web-browsers and AFAIK other independently (not by Ubuntu, itself) published software. While working to setup Tahrpup, don't hesitate to seek advice. If Tahrpup proves satisfactory, don't hesitate to try to also setup Xenialpup since doing so would provide an operating system which will last you long into the future.

Xenialpup 7.5 - 'Xenial Xerus' 16.04 LTS
Tahrpup 6.06 - 'Trusty Tahr' 14.04 LTS
Precise Puppy 5.7.1 - 'Precise Pangolin' 12.04 LTS
Lucid Puppy (Lupu) 5.2.8.7 - 'Lucid Lynx' 10.04 LTS

@ borgward:-
Mike's right, though; it's going to be a case of trying out relevant versions of the Pups/Dogs that would have been released within, say, 6 months or so of that card being on the market - 6 months being the allowable minimum amount of time it would take the parent distro's devs to reverse-engineer necessary drivers, etc.
Mike.

Hello, borgward.
May I be as bold as to "push" my latest slacko derivative, codenamed
"slackster-700", designed expressly for ~ 10-year-old PCs?
Best regards. (And Happy New year!)
