DevuanDog 'Beowulf' Alpha Subject description: For testing, feedback appreciated (updated 2019-02-17) |
|
*** DevuanDog 'Beowulf' ***
Update 2019-02-17, new ISO's, see changes and fixes on post #2 and here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=1018771#1018771
See also Here
Based on the Devuan 'Beowulf' branch, alpha version, for testing
Probably in summer of 2019 the Devuan beowulf branch becomes the new 'stable' (when ready)
Till that time, testing and feedback appreciated, also opinions about what to include or not, choice for Desktop environment etc... would be very welcome.
I chose for Devuan as a base (instead of Debian) because AFAIK the new expected Debian 'stable' (buster) doesn't give the choice anymore to boot without systemd.
Download: 32 and 64 bit ISO's, see Here
DEVX and Firmware squashfs modules: Here
Custom repository: 32-bit 64-bit
Login details:
root with password root
puppy with password puppy
Specifications:
Built from scratch by using debootstrap and remastered afterwards.
Kernel: 4.19.0-2 (change is that the kernel is separate module now, see also post #3)
(EDIT: See post #4 for how to boot with older kernel 3.16 if possibly your hardware is too old for booting v4.19)
Choice of Boot Methods: porteus-boot and live-boot v3 (see for options Here )
Default WM - OpenBox with on top PcmanFM (providing the desktop) and lxpanel.
Option to switch to JWM window-manager
Default File Manager - PcmanFM with option to use rox.
Default Internet Browser - Palemoon.
See info and links about possible Palemoon issues (on some machines with Intel graphics) here:

Upgrade/Install kernel |
|
From Menu > System > Upgrade/Install kernel (frugal install), you can upgrade the kernel or install a different one, for example non-pae:
(end result will be a folder containing: .squashfs module, initrd.img, initrd1.xz and vmlinuz1, which can be copied (and replace the original files) to the frugal install 'live' folder.
This will not modify the filesystem, the install takes place in chroot (jail)
Main GUI
Choose kernel to install and build aufs for
Building aufs module for the no-pae kernel . . .
Ready !

On older hardware, booting with the 4.19 kernel may not work well (too new perhaps).
Then (for frugal install) try the older 3.16 kernel (32 bit), download and extract:
https://github.com/DebianDog/DevuanDog/releases/download/v1.1/k-3.16.0-4-pae-beowulf.tar.gz
Copy the files inside extracted directory "k-3.16.0-4-pae-beowulf" to your frugal install 'live' folder (the files initrd.img, initrd1.xz and vmllinuz1 need to be overwritten, for safety, make backup of the original files first).
And reboot.

Which one doesn't work, the 4.19 version ?
You can try the 3.16 kernel maybe, or you did already and doesn't work either ?:

OK, thanks, but what exactly "does not work" for you ? Does the boot process stop at some point or what ? Some more details ,please.

Hi zagreb, can you test -- link to new initrd1.xz removed -- for me when you have time ?
(just replace original with this one in the "live" folder)
Made a change so it loads more kernel modules, which may solve the problem.
(boot time is a little longer because of that)
Edit: above link to initrd1.xz removed, because it wasn't an improvement.

Ok thanks for trying, but "does not work" isn't much helpful info.
What about is the error message ?
Same as before ? Is it about not being able to find .sgn file ? Or... ?
EDIT: Or, maybe you don't want to help with development, only complain about what doesn't work
In that case, please do not post here.
