Rodney Byne wrote:Hi jrb,
As one of my hobbies is playing libraries of classical
music and international url radio playlists,
yes I trial-installed them from the PPM as they
are available media players to be used.

Audacious and VLC worked ok, but I also wanted smplayer
to compare facilities and stereo sound spread quality
on my home hifi system.

From your comment you seem surprised,
Sorry I must have caught you a little off guard.

I had similar Multimedia problems with Barry K and EasyOS.
To resolve them, in the end he had to re-compile virtually
the entire stock of players to make them work properly.
Happily the result was a success.

It seems devs leave them for the guinea pigs to find probs
before doing anything about them.
They are not routinely tested to be compatible
with the OS concerned! The chief bugbear being missing
dependencies.
Anyway if you could look into making the smplayer package
launch, I for one would be grateful thanks.

By the way PlayMusic has a new fault, whereby after installing VLC,
it can't share the sound architecture bus anymore,
as it demands full priority to work to play music tracks.
The net effect is to constantly skip down the tracks list
without actually playing them.
So maybe the use of VLC and smplayer will have to be abandoned
after all?
Best regards, Rodney.
OK, Here's what works for me. Download http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/mplayer- ... recise.pet and http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/smplayer ... recise.pet. Install them. Post a thank you to OscarTalks.

Playmusic still works but if you want to make smplayer your defaultmediaplayer and/or defaultaudioplayer go to /usr/local/bin and make the following changes:

Code: Select all

exec playmusic "$@"
to

Code: Select all

exec smplayer "$@"
.

As for developers and guinea pigs, I like to tell people we are all developers. The truth is that developers are simply Puppy users who are willing to do a bit of work for others. Puppy has lost many good and talented people due to complaining, it kind of takes the fun out of it.

Downloaded and applied delta3. Glad to see that the main.sfs is now 76MB only, 4 MB less than the previous one.

The defaultbrowser is intentionally excluded. Very much appreciated this because everyone can choose his/her own favourite browser.

Thank you jrb.

To jrb,
noted above.

It appears that the downloaded portable browser installer
has updated palemoon from 26.5.0 to 28.5.0.

26.5.0 fully worked, but this change to 28.5.0 no longer
allows sky news tv live to function,
as video formats required are not supported.
Euronews is also noticeably jerky.

Also Get flash starts to download the selected flash
but then immediately fails as unavailable.
So got flash pet from Index of OscarTalks instead.

Good news though.
I hadn't realised that PlayMusic also runs home video clips.
So don't need another player for that mode.
Best regards, Rodney

Portable Browser Installer would not have removed the older Palemoon. It should still be in the system someplace and you should be able to access the binary as you did to create your symlink to the desktop.

I'm heading out on a road trip for the next two or three weeks. Will not be able to offer support until I get back.

I have had a keyboard map problem. In geany and generally speaking the local keyboard map works but it does not work when for example you try to rename a file or a dir. I thought it was a jwm problem. My test fix is to install:

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/jwm-913-i486.pet

EDIT: the bug also remains with this jwm update.

EDIT2: copying the following script for it local in /root/Startup the bug seems solved:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
setxkbmap it

Acer ZG5

#205 Post by peterw »

As it happens, I have an Acer ZG5 that admittedly, I don't use so much these days. It was the netbook that I used when travelling and was extremely good and did everything I needed. When the battery life was an annoyance, I bought cheap 7800 mAh ones and on powering it up now see that it still holds 5553 mAh.
Anyhow, it runs Slacko-6.3.2 (which is fully up to date) very well with no issues - Firefox runs OK, and watching videos is OK for a small screen. Looking at free RAM no SWAP has been used. Slacko http://slacko.eezy.xyz/download.php

Precise Qt libraries ?

#207 Post by mikeslr »

I employ several External Applications such as masterpdfeditor. To run, these require that qt libraries first be installed. Under Precise-light the version I've successfully used is the qt package I built into Slacko 5.7.2CE. However, it weighs in as an 82 Mb pet. If you need qt libraries, I'd suggest first trying the SFS mikeb made available via this link, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 843#834843, UNTESTED.

I try to download the .iso and .delta from the first post, but get no reaction at all. Are others experiencing the same problem?

Edit: Found the probable cause, I have a lot of blocked Google addresses in /etc/hosts... :?

Hi jrb & all

Here is a little PET file that converts the standard Precise-light desktop to the old style puppy desktop with classic icon placement.
I made this because I did not see an easy method to get the old style desktop icon layout via the installed programs.

What this PET does is change the pinboard and adds a few files necessary for icon assignment.

Tested on a frugal install and full install. The PET has pinstall and puninstall scripts that restart the Xorg server for the changes to take effect.
The PET will uninstall cleanly to return to the original desktop if wanted.

As of the precise-light-5.7.1+0.iso___precise-light-5.7.1+3.iso.delta, there are 3 menu entries that have missing icons.

Menu-->Utility-->UExtract
Menu-->Utility-->PackIt
Menu-->Internet-->Transmission

The attached PET adds the icons to the menu entries.
It consists of updated desktop files

This pet is for Precise-light-5.7.1 only.
This is not for the recently released Precise-light-5.7.2

01micko's nice little CPU temperature icon for the tray works nicely in Precise-light.
I like to keep an eye on my cpu temp as it will go over 90 degrees centigrade often, nature of the laptop design.

Go to http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=98299 for the tiny PET
Using the pmcputemp-0.63-i686.pet for Tahr.

This is not for the recently released Precise-light-5.7.2

Precise-light will run the Light browser (version-48 ) that comes with peebee's bionicpup19.03 32-bit puppy (latest version)
The Light browser is a low resource browser based on mozilla's gecko engine. It still uses the old style .xpi add-ons.

To install Light browser just copy the adrv_precise_light-5.7.1.sfs (or renamed adrv_precise_light-5.7.2.sfs) to the same directory as your
Precise-light boot files and the adrv will load automatically during boot - same way as the newer puppy versions.
You can start Light browser from the menu. use Menu-->Internet-->Light

Youtube worked for me though not extensively tested, this browser is similar to Pale Moon. Posting from it now.

Download the Light browser from bionicpup32 19.03 here
https://ibm-pc.org/puppy/precise/adrv_p ... -5.7.1.sfs

Its about 21MB and has been renamed to a proper adrv sfs for Precise-light-5.7.1
To use in Precise-light-5.7.2 rename it to adrv_precise_light-5.7.2.sfs
This should be copied to the same directory as your Precise-light boot files and the
adrv will load automatically during boot - same way as the newer puppy versions.

Some working security related add-ons for Light browser
NoScript version 2.9.0.11, HTTPS-Everywhere version 3.4.5 and uBlock Origin version 1.16.4.7 work with Light browser.
I zipped up my "extensions" directory and made it available here due to these older ,xpi extensions being hard to find
Get them here https://ibm-pc.org/puppy/precise/extensions.tar.gz
Its 3MB and has instructions for installing the extensions in the included info.txt - install one or all, your choice.

MMview is an excellent gtk-based file viewer program that is extremely light-weight and very useful.
Read the feature list & download http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=109573

It does a lot and is tiny which fits the character of Precise-light nicely.
MMview was created by forum member MochiMoppel
I especially like his latest mod "special desktop edition"http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 50#1035750 :)

Good call, mikeslr, Master PDF Editor and mikeb's QT package tested and working fine in Precise-light.
I used the master-pdf-editor-3.5.10.sfs from Geoffrey available from first post in this thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=101077
AND
The QT package from mikeb's post, here it is one more time to consolidate the reply.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 843#834843
Incidentally, mikeb's QT package is about 18MB and Geoffrey's Master PDF Editor is about 8MB
