Application launcher recommendations? |
|
On TazPup64 I'm trying both the jwm desktop and also the lxde desktop with the tint2 panel. The launcher on the tint2 panel is pretty basic. You press a button to launch an application. The icons are small and it saves time by not having to navigate through menus.
You can also right click on the panel to get an open box menu. This menu is manually configured which means that you can keep it cleaner than a typical puppy menu but at the cost that it might not contain all the applications.
Doing a quick search on launchers I see that some of them look as though you can type and it will dynamically find the best match. I find this quite convenient on windows 7 and up but at the same time I don't know how light-weight such an approach is.
A quick search for lightwing lauchers brings up two options:
Albert - Ranked #82 at www.slant.co
Ulauncher - Mentioned at www.omgubuntu.co.uk/
and there are many others. Does anyone have any recommendations or should I just start trying them; starting with the above two I suppose.
The SliTaZ package manager on the next64 branch has the following lauchers as options:
adeskbar - application lanucher for Openbox
gmrun - program launcher with autocompletion
lxlauncher - LXDE launcher for netwbooks
tklaucher - TKLaucher desktop laucher
tklaucher-alt - TkLaucher desktop laucher (using tcl2c fork)
xlunch - Graphical app launcher for X with minimal dependencies.
Maybe I'll try gmrun first since it has autocompletion.
Edit 1 gmrun is probably all I need, nice and simple but I would still like to here other peoples opinions.

This is probably way more than you are looking for.

I'll look into it. One thing that I don't like about gmrun is (as far as I know) it only completes the end of the string and not the beginning of the string.

Have u thought about just keyboard combo, e.g. just Super+r (same as Mod4+r) in my case launches ROX?
You can customize with JWM Desktop setup, JWMHotkey, or manual edit with geany ~/.jwm/jwmrc-personal file.

Some shortcut keys are cetainly helpful but I wouldn't do that for all aps. One shortcut key could lauch the laucher.

I don't know all the details but i think Puppus Dogfellow was using Geany as an application launcher. Whether or not it can alpha search while you are typing I don't know but might be worth a look....
