chromium web browser under Precise Pup 5.7.1 ? Subject description: troubleshooting optioins? |
|
I have Precise Puppy 571 loaded on an old PIII machine as a live disc w pup save file.
I have loaded the chromium browser 37.0.2062 as offered in the install utility.
The chromium browser shows up as an option in the INTERNET category of the Menu but nothing happens when I try to launch it.
What are my troubleshooting options in such a case?
I tried typing "chromium" in to a command line session but just got the "no such thing" response.
Am I expecting too much of an old version of Puppy?
Thanks,
Brian H.

Your processor is the problem.
Minimum requirement is An Intel Pentium 4 processor or later that's SSE2 capable.
A P 3 is just too old.
SSE2 is now a standard requirement for all modern browsers.
Chromium 35 introduced the requirement of SSE2 instructions.
I guess you could try to find a version older than Chromium 35, but it may or may not work with modern web pages.
This is big company thinking.

I'm sorry, you don't exist.
