it's simply that the arrowheads are missing from the top and bottom of the scroll bars, so a slow scroll is not an option.
I am not seeing this problem.

Could you post an image of what you see.

menu>Graphic>Take a Shot
This can make an image to post.
Use Window not full screen setting.
Window setting will make a pointer you place on a window and left click to take picture of that window.
Post the image as an attachment to a post.

There is a forum size limit of 256K.
You can edit image with Mtpaint program if it is too big.
Mtpaint>Image>Scale Canvas will size the image.
Use a width of no more than 700.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Sorry for the delay, I've not been on for a few days - playing with my new puppy in other ways.

Thanks for the comprehensive instructions - I need those!

@ icosahedron:-

That's exactly what I see if I use Firefox Quantum (67 or 60esr) in UPup 'Raring'. Mind you, it doesn't bother me at all; I can still scroll through a page as normal, and if I want to 'slow-scroll' I just 'grab' the 'handle' and carefully move it to where I want it to go.....

(*shrug*)

That's how it was with me, and doubtless many others, to begin with. However, after a while, you may find you're able to leave little 'hint's, or tips & tricks, for other forum members.....drawing on your own experience.

If you feel like doing so, don't hold back. Do so, by all means. That's exactly what makes this forum WORK.......and many others like it.

(Having said which, it's also true that every forum I've ever visited seems to have a 'core' group of members who are always answering queries and discussing stuff.....followed by many 'occasionals' who pop up every now and then.)

The best and most consistent browser I use in Windows and Puppy
is Slimjet.

And i now use Startpage as it is Ixquicks' successor.

slimjet-15.1.6.0-i686.pet runs well in Radkys' Stretch
and even runs in a Quirky cd from 2014.

None of this can't go to the site crap.

Need more Slimjets...thanks to those Puppy devs.

""""""""""

And mate you still never told us the model....

Acer WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike - my ‘other’ attachment shows the same lack of arrowheads on Abiword - so it can’t just be the browser.

Oops. Maybe I should revise my signature again - that’s absolutely not what I meant. I was sniping at the way the internet at large constantly tries to collect your personal data, tracks where you go and what you do, and you have a constant battle to try to retain a little privacy.

It’s nothing about this site at all. You guys are great, and yes, if I can help in any way, I will - such as posting what I see to aid with a bug fix, or putting a synopsis of my original problem in the first post to help anyone else with the same difficulty.

Unfortunately, with my minimal computer knowledge, that’s about all I can do, and I don’t have the time (or inclination, really) to learn more. I’m a bit like a farmer getting his crop in - a combined harvester is a useful tool, but the only time I need to know how it works, is when it doesn’t!

cthisbear - AFAIK I gave the make and model in my second post on page 1. If those numbers aren’t the model number, then I dunno what it is, I’d have to rummage through the paperwork that came with it.

Incidentally, in the interests of providing information to the community - I've discovered something else connected with the original issue.

If I boot to Windoze for any reason, it hijacks my boot settings and places 'Boot from Windoze' back at the top of the boot menu, so I have to F2/F12 and F6 before I can boot Puppy from the USB again.

Not a problem, but an irritation.

With the old BIOS, I set the Boot Order once, and thereafter the computer just checked if there was a USB plugged in. If there was, it booted from it, and if there wasn't, it booted from the HDD. With UEFI, it seems you have to reset the Boot Order each time Windoze is woken up.

Maybe there's some Boot Order Hijacker control somewhere in Windoze (very difficult / impossible to find and disable, no doubt) that will force it to leave my Boot Menu settings alone.

"The Customer is King" is not exactly a Microsoft principle, is it?
"The Customer is a Mark" seems closer to their ideology. :(

Different people may be having different scrolling issues. For me, it's simply that the arrowheads are missing from the top and bottom of the scroll bars, so a slow scroll is not an option.
In Bionicpup64, 666philb has updated the Numix and Shiny themes to support legacy GTK2 applications common to Puppy Linux as well as modern GTK3 applications such as Firefox Quantum.

You can add scrollbar arrowheads (forward and backward steppers).

For example, for the Murrine GTK2 Numix theme, go to /usr/share/themes/Numix/gtk-2.0/gtkrc, search for GtkScrollbar and change the default "0" setting to "1" as follows:

Edit:

Code: Select all

GtkScrollbar::has-backward-stepper = 1
GtkScrollbar::has-forward-stepper = 1
On the other hand, for GTK3 theming (for example, Firefox Quantum) you could create /root/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css and add the following code:

Code: Select all

.scrollbar,
scrollbar {
    -GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: true;
    -GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: true;
}
Then select the desired GTK theme as usual, and click Apply.

radky,

For the gtk3 fix for Firefox Quantum.
Has it actually worked for you?

I tried it in Bionicpup64 8.0 and it seems to have no affect on Firefox scrollbar.

Bigpup,

With the Numix GTK theme in Firefox Quantum the scrollbar arrowheads (forward and backward steppers) are small and show low contrast, but they are located along the upper and lower margins of the scrollbar trough. For me, they function as expected in BionicPup64.

Bigpup,

I installed Firefox 67.0 in BionicPup64 via fredx181's Quantum Portable release.

It seems you have selected the Dark GTK theme through Firefox Customize -> Themes.

If you manually resize the FIrefox window (smaller size), the icons will look like those in my screen shot.

---

I'm not sure why the scrollbar steppers are not visible in your installation of Firefox Quantum.

After you created /root/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css and added the following code:

Code: Select all

.scrollbar,
scrollbar {
    -GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: true;
    -GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: true;
}
did you go to the Puppy gtktheme changer and re-select the Numix theme and click Apply? This should reload the updated theming parameters.

I think my version of Firefox is not the same as the one you are using.

Thanks for info!!
I installed Firefox 67.0 in BionicPup64 via fredx181's Quantum Portable release.
I am trying this on the Firefox desktop version from Firefox web site.
Not packaged up for specifically Puppy.

I will try fredx181's version and see what I get.

Apologies ...I didn't notice the specs in that post.
