Came across ASOP in a goverment telecommunications release the other day, talk was to make it mandatory with google as a package to be downloaded and added afterwards if wanted (not to be mandatory). I think it was from either India or Vietnam, do know Japan is considering it mandatory at least for all 'kids' phones at least as they have some of their own 'protected apps' most of the kids use that are not suitable for most adults (would be conmsidered too basic a function list).

China has had a couple of self-built linux versions out for a while, Lenovo was selling laptops with one as an option last year, so I don't have a concern with Ark OS as it should be easy to work out if there is anything strange with it, the only concern would be if it still has to connect to a Chinese mainland server to run as one did, slow connections that would drop out 'at the drop-of-a-hat'.

Huawei must have read James' earlier post, and is apparently looking at Sailfish, which is by Jolla, which is the extension of Meego, which is the descendant of Maemo, which is a debian-ish distro from Nokia....

However, the main attraction is Sailfish OS’ focus on privacy. Jolla only collects information needed to run its services and doesn’t sell your data to third parties without your consent. Also, Jolla doesn’t collect any data without your consent.

That info should stop comments about Huawei collecting data for the Chinese government.

I've always liked the idea of Sailfish, after having a Nokia N900 for years and then an N9.

Potentially Huawei could capitalise on this if they release a secure OS that can use the Android play store.

Less ads, less intrusion, less BIG G following your every move. Sounds good to me.

Huawei doesn't need the playstore, they have always provided their own store. just compatibility with apk packages is enough.

Does anyone remember the Blackberry-10 (aka BBX)? That had QNX as the OS. The US Gov't hated THAT so much (real end-user privacy) that they essentially blackballed it.

Huawei is going in the same direction for apparently different reason(s).

The chinese philosophy has always been to think long-term, planning for the future. You can even see it in the sub-title for the Deepin OS, 'Better never stops'. They will probably not be very affected by typical american activities based on short-term economic profits.
