PostPosted: Mon 09 Sep 2019, 12:01    Post subject:  Sept 9 - YT downloaders not working
Subject description: Firefox Quantum 69.0

Firefox browser downloader addons are not working. Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express (green button) does not show up beneath the YT player. Videos downloaded with Video DownloadHelper fail to aggregate, and the download fails with errors. The target video seems to be WEBM format, but as far as I can tell, no videos are downloading. Did the recent FF Quantum upgrade to version 69.0 break things?

@ nubc:-

VideoDownloaderProfessional, which I've used for some years, tells me that particular video was encoded using what's known as the MPEG-DASH technique. This splits the file into 'chunks', and to download it and play it back requires specialist software that knows how to deal with this technique, and what order to re-assemble those chunks in (and what to actually do with them once it has them).

Most video downloaders simply don't understand this technique, apparently.....

Just FYI, you understand. I get this same response in Palemoon, FF68esr, and a couple of different Chromium-based browsers. You know what YouTube are like; constantly trying to find ways to make you watch videos on the site itself.....

As paradoxical as it may seem, I'm still optimistic that my main downloader is not showing, so maybe the problem is compatibiiity or compliance with the new FF version. I've never had any problems with Classical Tunes uploads before. The site is pretty generous about what it puts out. Generally, classical music is sort of a free-for-all, so there's no call to make things difficult. Got my fingers crossed it's just the new Firefox giving trouble. I expect a day or two to work out the kinks. In the meantime, I'm looking for a workaround.

Oh, can you download any other video, that's not MPEG-DASH?

YT has changed their system for hosting videos. Just use an online download site like https://9xbuddy.com/ or https://www.savethevideo.com/ to download in mp4 format. Note that almost all YT videos are available as one file (video and audio tracks combined) in the mp4 and webm format at 360P resolution BUT if it is also available at higher resolution the video and audio tracks are normally split. In the latter case I would normally use https://www.savethevideo.com/
to download the tracks separately and combine it with the FF Convert application in puppy's menu. This is a quick process as you just select "copy" for both video and audio tracks.

I just tested Video DownloadHelper Version 7.3.7, and it worked as usual (Portable Firefox, latest version).

There is an issue with online downloaders. The target video is a full CD, a large file. Most online downloaders limit the size of the download, and instead of downloading a long video, just play it back.

I tried Video DownloadHelper five times yesterday, and it didn't work. The options for conversion also confused me, because there are 3 different size parameters for the MP4 format . For example, "MP4 (1 MB)" | "MP4 (2 MB)" | "MP4 (4 MB)" I have no idea what those size values refer to. The videos I tried to d/l were all WEBM. I would prefer to download as MP4, and skip the conversion.

Well, that's a sure sign that your Video Download Helper does not work.. I also used that a few months ago and the same happened. Useless. The sizes are not limited with those sites I mentioned in an earlier post as far as I know and it's no conversions but the actual files available on the google server.

Using 9xbuddy, I've been observing a "Download launched" spinning circle (wait) for about 15 minutes now. Savethevideo just played back the video.

I just viewed a tutorial for VDH and it claims to handle DASH videos.

EDIT: VDH completed download with Error. "Failed to aggregate "YouTube"

Don't know what you are doing wrong but I have been using those two sites for a long time without any problems. Anyways, good luck.

Edit: With savethevideo sometimes you sometimes need to click the get download links a few times before it takes. Right-click and save as to save a file. You can also use the alternative download link.

I always get the list of all the different formats. I usually choose the smallest resolution mp4 (because I am usually downloading for watching on phone).

There is a companion application for linux you have to install.

https://www.downloadhelper.net/install-coapp

For a test, I just downloaded one using the highest mp4 resolution and it worked too.

edit: FWIW, I just tested GtkYoutube Viewer and was able to view and download a video. All of this is in Debian Dog Stretch.

Thanks, nic007. I think you finally nudged me in the right direction. I right-clicked the link obtained at 9xbuddy, and acquired the target video.

Just guessing, but maybe when you save the link, you are designating your hdd as the destination drive for the temporary save file, until the download is complete. So that large files don't take up space on the site's servers while they are downloading.

Yes, dancytron, I installed the coapp (Deb pkg), but the download is still failing.

The complete files are on Google's servers so you are actually downloading it directly from there. Savethevideo also has an additional function where they provide an alternative download link. What happens in the latter case is that the file is uploaded "internally" from google to their servers in quick time and you then download it from their servers. This is really cool because I have downloaded numerous files this way which have been blocked for some reason on google's servers.

Well the sizes that nubc got are all wrong. Do us a favour and try the link he gave in his first post. I never used Videodownloadhelper with Linux but only with Windows and had the same problems which nubc referred too.

Okay, it failed. The videos I usually download are 15-20 minutes long, if that matters.

See screenshot.

I've seen the first error before, I don't think that's the failure.

When I clicked details on second "fail to aggregate error", I got this.

Quote:
Failed aggregating "Mozart Flute & Piano Sonatas - Soothing Instrumental Classical Music - YouTube"

edit: okay, I checked and my version of clib6 is 2.24-11+deb9u4. I have a version of beowulf Debian dog that should have a later version. I will check if it works there later.

edit again:gtk youtube viewer also failed to download it.
