Download the yahoo.dotpup

#1 Post by klhrevolutionist »

This will place an executable called ymessenger.com in /root/my-applications/bin/
you can drag'n'drop the file to your desktop as you probably will
I know it took long enough but I'm catching on after about three or four months
of puppy!!!

Very good. You are learning.

Interestingly, I think using Puppy and participating on this formum is one of the best ways to learn Linux.

Congratulations!

Not meaning to be inquisitive, but why did you rename a .bin to a .com?

Did you used to use Windows or DOS or something like that?

bin to com

#4 Post by Mr Doolie »

Maybe because I told him to. I'm a noobee but after MUCH playing around I've found that if you just change the permissions to executable Puppy (well, rox anyway) doesn't know what to do with the file. It stays looking like a rectangle. But if you rename it to com it changes into a gear and is runnable.

Is this wrong?

Good job on the messenger.
Have to agree about learning Linux. I have found GAIM very good (but I must admit I mostly use the chat button on top of this forum. This is another great way of learning Linux - using the Puppy IRC channel - not always someone there and some people are just on idle (there but not not chatting) kinda IRC lurkers . . .
I firstly used xchat which was very comprehensive (but Gaim is built into Puppy) - I keep meaning to set up a skype conference - 4 way but keep forgetting.
How can we get video conferencing - with web cams - that would be fun :)

Thanks for the instructions.
I didn't rename it but it worked the same.

However, it crashed when receiving a file. Do you have the same problem?

BTW Puppy is amazing! Just what I'm looking for.

picking up

#8 Post by klhrevolutionist »

First let me say I'm glad this is picking up interest, this will let the big whigs know that this is dotpup candidate.
Secondly, unless you know the person your uploading from don't do it!
even then, you should have a virus scanner on it as soon as you upload it
if your having problems with the uploading in general, try this:

File Transfer
With Yahoo! Messenger, you can send files to people on your *(friend list)*

Here's how:

1. Right-click on the recipient's name in your Friend List.
2. Click on Send a File/Attachment.
3. A new window called "Transfer File..." will open.
4. Click the Browse button and locate the file that you want to send.
5. When you have selected the file, click the Transfer button.

If you receive a file, a window called "Yahoo! Messenger File Receive..." will pop up (you must be connected to the Yahoo! servers at the time to get this message). Follow these steps:

1. Click on the Browse button to select where you want to download the file.
2. Click the Download Now.

I was at this stage when the ymessenger crashed and I have to restart it. The file was from a trusted source and in fact I've received it by ftp.
Do you receive files w/o problems?

Yes, I am sorry for the late reply, but it seems as this is the only feature that does not
work. It is tuff to say whether this will be fixed in a future release or not.
I hope that you and others e-mail yahoo about this as I have.
And also mention that linux needs shoutcast too.
What I recommend is that for file-transfers you use gaim. This does work!
So sorry for late reply and remember to e-mail yahoo about this
