pdvdrip-0.9a
Depends on vobcopy and ffmpeg.
I never use pdvdrsab anymore because who needs to shrink with vamps and author a dvd anymore? I figured I would make this so you can get rid of vamps and dvdauthor and still have a small dvd ripping program.
When encoding to mkv, the program will search for audio streams in your ripped vob file and copy the first one to the mkv unless pcm or dts audio is found in that case it would convert that audio to flac to keep it lossless but make it smaller. The video stream will be encoded to mkv with libx265 if your version off ffmpeg supports that, otherwise it will try the libx264 codec.
0.2 - fixed a bug and added the ability to convert video files to mkv without ripping
0.3 - added an option for the user to be able to select the audio stream to add to the encoded mkv or just stick with the defaults
0.4 - add the option to be able to save subtitles
0.5 - internationalized and added a de-interlace option
0.6 - added the ability to play specified titles, audio streams, and subtitle streams so you know exactly what you are getting for the end result. Also vobcopy is piped directly to ffmpeg to speed up the total process for the rip and encode.
0.6a - added French translation
0.7 - added options to extract portion of video as well as being able to choose your resolution and video codec.
0.9 - changed the audio conversion gui

Thanks, plinej. I downloaded version 0.3 but won't have a chance to use it for a while. Will it convert .iso files to something my Samsung "smart" TV will play from a USB flash drive? (Years ago I converted some movies into .iso files so it would be easy to burn them to a DVD that would play in my DVD player. No need for that now.)
0.4 is up
If anyone needs any other options, let me know. I think this does everything I want it to other than possibly adding other codecs to select from besides mp3 in the audio stream conversion gui.
