Podcasts: Applications and Website directories

#1 Post by mikeslr »

Mike Walsh's recent post about searching for podcast clients or alternatives, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 57#1062257 got me interested. I was surprised that nothing showed up in this, the Additional Software>Browsers and Internet Section. I found an old pet, puppy-podcast-grabber-1.1.pet, http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/ discussed here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 9935#59935 which ran. But, I didn't understand how to use it and, DaveS, who worked on it, posted a decade ago that even then it was "a downloader only and not very flexible." http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 822#437822

Of course, as DaveS also said there, "Both Firefox and Seamonkey 2 can handle RSS (podcast) feeds too". So, maybe the capabilities of web-browsers with Addon/Extensions are sufficient.

That said, the first thread started by Mike Walsh referenced above for using Play.FM when you have a Chromium Clone; and my addition there on how to create a menu entry to the URL of any Podcast "accumulator".

If, however, you know of any specific desktop application this thread would be as good a place as any to provide details about it.

As far as specific Websites which accumulate, aggregate or otherwise serve as a "jumping off point" for a bunch of podcasts, as previously mentioned, there's Play.FM. There's also http://www.cloud-caster.com/

So far, I've only found one other: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/. Well, a little more searching revealed spotify and some others with "Accounts --maybe just facebook or others-- required".

No account was required for https://tunein.com/podcasts/ Most, not all, podcasts could be heard using Vivaldi. Using Palemoon, all I got was a spinning wheel. There's Free and Premium. Premium is $9.99 p/m, and provides "Live NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL Games, Commercial-free Music".

Feel free to provide links to others.

Hallo, Mike.

In my case, I went for a website - as opposed to an extension - simply because I wanted to be able to turn it into a desktop "app".

However, during my experimenting I did try out a few podcast extensions for the 'clones'.....and one, in particular, stood out head & shoulders above the rest for professional appearance and general ease of use (once you've got the hang of how it works, that is; there's no instructions, unfortunately).

SmarterPod

It's not exactly 'intuitive', though that could just be me! (More than likely is, TBH, since I seem to have this 'blind spot' for the functionality of more modern software, especially ever since this 'flat' GUI design became popular a few years ago, and there's no longer any indications of whether something IS a 'function' or not! Am I the only one that finds this to be the case?)

Regardless, once you have it set-up correctly, it'll allow you to listen to & follow on-going 'series' of podcasts.....especially if you've already subscribed to a series elsewhere. You can also search for, and discover new subject matter of interest.

Good if you want to listen to stuff while you're doing other things in the browser. Wherever you halt a podcast, it will remember this, and re-start you at the exact point you paused previously...

(The whole term 'podcast' smacks of summat esoteric to many people, but all they boil down to are pre-recorded audio tracks of topical interest, on a wide range of subject matter. Kinda like being able to 'pause' & 'rewind' live streaming media, except you're doing it with something more akin to radio.)

Not so different to DAB, actually.

Mike.

Hi trapster,

guayadeque. I remembered it as, in general, a very nice and capable player of music from whatever source. That it does have a specific mechanism for managing podcasts hadn't stuck in my memory. And I was mistaken under which Puppy I had installed it. But, a little searching revealed that a pet is still available on the Tahrpup32 Section of ibiblio, http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-tahr/

Mike, thanks for information about Smarterpod. Added to my ToDo List to check it out. :).

Well, as I didn't recall where I put my ToDo List I figured I'd better check it out right away before --like most of the details of modern life-- it vanished into the indiscernible din of background noise.

You're right. Smarterpod's GUI isn't particularly intuitive. Or maybe like Danny Glover "I'm getting too old for this." I almost missed it's best feature: It's Search facility. See Attached. Using it, you can search for Podcasts by their name or category.

Bamboo Feed Reader & Other Mozilla Addons

#5 Post by mikeslr »

Bamboo Feed Reader is an extension available to Palemoon. It has no Search Function and --while others can be added-- only two immediately available Feed: The Mozilla Blog and Mozilla Youtube. I tried the latter. Sound and picture came thru very well. And, of course, once you've connected to Youtube you can use its Search box to look for other podcasts on Youtube.

If you've installed the Legacy/Classic Addons "Addons", http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 07#1021807 you might try Podcast Player Prime. https://mybrowseraddon.com/podcast-player.html Untested as it does not have a Search function. Podcast Player Prime is also available as a current firefox addon.

Using the term "RSS" in Legacy's Search Box revealed 38 extension for managing RSS feeds. I didn't try any as none advertised having a Search Function.

There are many current Firefox addons including Feedbro and PinRSS Feed Finder. Feedbro looks to be a very complete tool for managing RSS-Feeds/Podcasts, lacking only a Search function such as that of SmarterPod. PinRSS Feed provides a Search Function. But the general consensus of the 23 users reviewing it was 2.5 out of 5 stars; and it still has Mozilla's warning "This is not monitored for security through Mozilla's Recommended Extensions program. Make sure you trust it before installing."

By many, I mean far too many for me to examine each closely. If you find any worth mentioning, please do.
