I know this is probably an incredibly stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway... I'm tech challenge, by the way, so speak slowly and use tiny words. I have an adequate computer computer at home (3200 Athlon XP, 512 MB, 200 GB Ultra DMA hard drive Windows XP with all updates) and I operate a piece of crap Mac 8.6 at work. I purchased a 512 mb ministick USB flash Drive. What I want to do, is download Puppy, or aspects of puppy onto my flash drive, and use its portability to operate the basics, including calendar, text, browser, directly from the Flash Drive in other words run those operations from Flash drive, on both computers
My boss is very hinky about downloading anything - and I mean anything - onto the office system, but I think I can get away with a mysterious thingamabob that I plug in, operate and take away with me.
Is this even doable? If it is doable, how do I do it. You Linux guys usually are incredibly brillian people, and are right on the ball about these things. (an unabashed attempt at flattery in a brazen attempt to obtain answers.)

Runkster,

Puppy is designed to make life easy, and is perfect for the purpose you have described. Check out the flash-Puppy instructions here:

http://www.goosee.com/puppy/flash-puppy.htm

I know that there are sometimes issues, depending on the type of flash drive you have, but there is plenty of help available in the forums and on the wiki if you have issues.

Have fun!

Puppy will not run on the Mac (no one has compiled a version for the Mac processor)

You may be able to run Puppy on your Office Mac if it has a PC emulator - one of our members did this but it is not ideal

Smile

If your Mac is running any version of OS 8, then don't even think of trying to run an X86 based operating system on it. You may find a PPC based Linux but I dont know if Macs that old even support booting from USB. You would be better off with a Live CD. Ubuntu offers a live CD that will work with most Macs. In a year or two when Macs are running on intel it should be possible to run Puppy on Macs without any emulator.

There is also some doubt that you can even boot from USB on your work computer.

Wow! ... Clear and concise answers to my question, understandable and ... Well, I have to tell ya, I'm stunned. Thanks a lot. I guess my best bet is to play around with puppy on a stick with my home computer (downloaded, haven't installed yet) and wait for my employers to upgrade to the 20th century hopefully before I lose all my hair and gray cells.
Thanks again for your assistance. I'll probably be back with more questions when and if I get Puppy up and running. Smile
