Can I run Puppy from parallel zip drive and a floppy boot?

#1 Post by robwillmann »

Hi.

new here. Not new to Linux. Have used many distro's.

Got the latest Puppy to work from CD.

However, what I was hoping to do is to get Puppy working from a parallel port Zip drive (holds 100 Megs) and a Floppy Boot disk.

PC won't actually boot from the parallel zip drive, so I assume I will have to use a boot floppy.

Is this possible? And if so, is there a HOWTO somewhere I can read on this topic?

Thanks,

Rob W.

P.S. Puppy rocks!

What will your computer BIOS allow you to boot from? Can it boot from USB, or just the standard floppy, CD and Hard Drive?

Bios allows HDD, CD-Ron, Floppy

Bios allows HDD, CD-Ron, Floppy.

So I've read (on the Zipslack/Slackware website) that you CAN use a boot disk to load the kernel from a floppy and have the rest of Linux on a zip.

So, I know it can be done with slackware's version. And since their version is 95 megs, I assumed it could be done with puppy as well.

Just a matter of finding someone who's done it before.

Thanks.

Parallel port zip install

#7 Post by PeterSieg »

Hi. I have used zipslack once, but that is 'years' ago :)

Basically, what you have to do is the same that zipslack does.
On the boot floppy, you need to start a kernel, that either has the
required driver for parallel port zip device compiled it, or that has them
ready to start in initrd. This drives usually mount under /dev/sda4 if
I remember right. You also need some scsi stuff (compiled in or as module).
So you know it has to work and can start to bite it...
In the past I remember, there were 2 drivers. One for normal, one for the
plus version of the drives..

But anyway, these old zip drives are out of production and out of mind
for quite some time now.. Why wasting time for that.. Buy I cheap usb stick
and go with that..

PS
Have fun :)

Rob, I've just uploaded an alternative Puppy boot floppy which includes support for booting from parallel port ZIP drives.

See my announcement: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=1346

Please give it a try - hope it works for you.

Good luck :)

If it works, I'll put it in the sticky index. Keep us posted, will you? Thanks.
