Wary Puppy runs great on my 12 year old Gateway laptop. The LCD screen burned out on it several years ago and I use an external 15" Viewsonic CRT monitor with it that displays in 1024x768 with 24bit color.

Thinkpad 600E runs Wary 5.2.2 reasonably well.

Cost: seems to usually go for $50 to $100 on EBay, so not a particularly good value. OTOH it does qualify as cheap.

Specs for mine:
400 MHz Pentium II processor
192 MB of PC100 RAM (I think this was upgraded on mine though)
40 GB IDE hard disk (originally 20 GB but that one broke)
Some sort of Neomagic GPU
2 16-bit PCMCIA slots

Quirks:
Needs acpi=force to boot from the CD.
Takes a long time (~20 seconds) to POST.
BIOS setup screen is very unintuitive, and uses a cursor shaped like a duck, which flaps its wings when you move it.

Problems:
Only one USB port, which may or may not have lag problems with certain USB mice.
No ethernet, you need a PCMCIA ethernet card - I use an old 3Com model.
No wireless, and I've no idea if there are any compatible wifi cards.
Screen is rather low res, laptop is heavy and bulky, battery life is rubbish... etc.

What is usable:
Rox, Geany, Seamonkey... Basically most stuff. JWM's outline move/resize helps a lot. Responsiveness is generally on par with Windows 2000, and boot time is about the same. Don't expect Seamonkey to handle Hotmail or anything else JS intensive though.

What is not usable:
Abiword is completely broken - smooth scrolling is hardcoded into the current version, but the poor CPU is too weak to handle it, which makes the word processor unresponsive when typing. This is really the fault of the Abiword devs, for failing to provide an off switch for this behavior! Too bad though, because everyone needs word processing.

Misc. advice:
Use a full install, not a frugal install. Frugal takes twice as long to boot on this computer, and has no real advantages, at least until someone figures out how to make a multi-user distro run on this slowpoke.

P.S. If anyone does figure out how to make Debian or Slackware or something run usably on this thing, please drop me a line!

Thin client conversions are fun ;) and some of them are actually useful, too. Just pull the flash disk module, and put in an IDE->CF adapter and either CF card or Microdrive (I like 8gig Microdrives a lot -- especially since you can put swap on 'em). You probably will want to upgrade the RAM as well.

Older thin clients (anything with an AMD Geode CPU) will be obnoxiously slow running Puppy of any kind (well... maybe not PupNGo...). However, I have a thin client right now that has Puplite 5 on it and is quite responsive -- about on par with my ASUS 1000HEB netbook!

That particular model (which I recommend) is a NeoWare CA19 that I purchased on eBay. (I was supposed to get a CA21, but whatever, it works fine.) There aren't many on eBay at this moment, but those that are are going for around $25-30 including shipping. You'll need about $10-15 for the RAM; the CF adapter should be $5 or less; and the CF card itself will set you back about the same price as the system unit if you get a nice one (same with Microdrives -- 4gig ones go for about $15, but the 8gig ones are more like $30).

The nice things about the CA19 are that it has fairly modern RAM (a DDR2 laptop style SODIMM) and that the drive connector is the laptop style 44pin -- that means that the connector is self-powering and you don't have to splice a 5/3.3volt CF card into a 12volt power supply somehow (probably this would involve a run to a local electronics supply store for some regulator components!). BTW, there's a USB header on the board, unused, so if you don't need a parallel port you can double your USB ports... handy.

More on the thin-client-as-desktop stuff --> www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/
That guy is awesome and knows everything about this stuff.

i am impressed with graphix and hd audio. i have paid more for video cards in the old days.
hmmmm....theres only 1 screw in the case...i wonder what happens when i take it out????

I'm running Precise 5.6.1 on the same system and it works very nicely. Haven't had one problem with it. :)

eee 900 series

#142 Post by ThoriumBlvd »

On ebay there are quite a few 900 series (900a, ha, 901, 904hd, etc) availible. Some like the 900a will get bricked by the Xandros or XP, and be availible for $100 or less used (careful... make sure the words FOR PARTS ONLY is not there). I'm using a new one from early 2009 from BB for $149.
Finding a black eee will be difficult. IMHO $70-100 is fair.

Old post, I know, but...
I used to have a Thinkpad 600X that was at most 500 MHz. It ran Dapper Drake...
For wireless, I used a prism54-based PCMCIA card.

For a wordprocessor, try Ted (http://nllgg.nl/Ted/).

As far as Debian goes, I'd start with a plain (text) install, then add roughly the stuff that Puppy uses (apt-get install xinit jwm xterm rxvt-unicode iceape rox-filer geany gnumeric menu).

Hi...

The problem with the 600E was that it was a Pentium II system whereas yours had a Pentium III. That will still make quite a bit of difference in software performance. :(

However, the hardware you mentioned might still work with it.

Great buys abound these days with the bigger surplus houses. i got a Lenovo Thinkcentre w/ dual core 2.66ghz and 4g RAM for $75, no hard drive. Beats what I could buy 5 years ago for the same amount from the same kind of surplus dealer. I like getting machines without windows installed. $15 bucks for a new sata HDD from ebay and there's a great puppy machine for under $100. Slacko Pup64 runs great on it.
Dell optiplex 780, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz, 4g RAM, w/ATI RV620 LE Radeon HD 3450. Currently running a full install of Slacko 6.3.0 ( 32 bit version).

@EdD:

Nothing to do with any of this (other than I started this thread a few years ago...), but where in Southside Virginia? I am a native Virginian, and my family moved to Chase City from my Charlottesville birthplace when I was in my mid-teens.

Blows me away that Google has a data center near Boydton. I worked for a summer in a drive-in restaurant in Boydton my junior year.

Of course, I am 30+ years removed from my mid-teens now, and I live in central Alabama, but I still have family in VA and get back there a couple of times a year...

Mike, I live down near Blackstone. Southside does stretch a long way, doesn't it? I'm a transplant, though. Came here in '98.

$41.40 - 2002 IBM ThinkPad T30 / running Slacko Puppy 5.3.1

#148 Post by Chrispy »

I built brought back to life a very cheap machine today running Slacko Puppy Linux 5.3.1. For $25 I was able to pickup a 2002 IBM ThinkPad T30 laptop, that once upon a time ran Windows XP. The installation did not go quite as planned, but I was able to get the machine up and running again.

Since the hard drive is shot, and the operating system will not run from USB flash drive, I have to reinstall Slacko everytime I boot up the computer. However, in 4 minutes, and 30 seconds, I can go from pressing the "on" button to surfing the web with the help of my $17.31 Belkin N150 Wi-Fi USB Adapter.

"Undeadbook" (web thin client) total cost: $41.40

My addiction:

#149 Post by Marv »

Added another Fujitsu lifebook s series to my stable today. This one a 6231 for $70. Brings the total up to 4 now, a 6110, a 6210, a 6231, and a 6520. I'd guess the price per unit averaged over all of them is about $100. Obviously I love these little jewels. Solid, cheap now, maintainable, sub 4 lbs, and all intel. Of course all puppy :D I've run all flavors of Saluki/Carolina, LxPup, X-precise, Boxpup, alphaOS and I forget what all else on them. All have CF cards or SSD replacing the HD (personal preference). Drawbacks.. non-PAE except for the 6520, and non-widescreen except for the 6520. I actually wind up using the 6210 most of the time except for extensive unsquashing or squashing which taxes the Pentium M some and thus falls to the core 2 duo 6520. The others are currently farmed out along with a Dell Latitude D610 and some IBM T series solid but too heavy for my current tastes. Specs on the 6210 are:

Edit: An aha :D For me anyway. This class of Pentium Ms, pre Dothan, actually have PAE capability but the PAE flag is not set so prior to now I've only been able to boot non-PAE OSs with them. In playing around with Saucy Salamander CE, I added forcepae as a kernel parameter (in the Grub4Dos menu.list item in my case) and it boots and runs  This seems to open up a fairly large class of acceptable 2005 era laptops to PAE kernels. Next download I'll check with another PAE pup.

Edited: Processor name corrected, Thanks Keef.
Edited 06/05/2014: :D :D :D :D The new 6231 is a Dothan, hence PAE, and has 2 Gb of ram. Whoopie :!: .
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

This is a great thread! I would think, now that Microsoft has abandoned support of XP, there should be an enormous amount of computers out there that are not really practical to upgrade to windows 7, just waiting to have puppy installed.

And in some cases, completely free (I recently acquired a retired Win7 class machine that was considered "too old" -- I couldn't use the Win7, as it was locked down to only connect with the corporate network, but 3GB RAM on a 3.4 GHz machine makes a pretty darn fast Puppy machine).

Re: $41.40 - 2002 IBM ThinkPad T30 / running Slacko Puppy 5.3.1

I think you can put you "save files" on a USB thumb drive, and not have to go through the 4 1/2 min. wait.

We'll see I guess.

Dell Latitude XT2

Not sure yet what will be shoe horned on here when it comes in.
I still have some parts to get for it. I know it will test out new Macpup
when it comes out but broadcom may stumble, or not.

Waiting on it. My Amrel was the last touchscreen Laptop I ever played with
using Puppy. The electronics on one of the Amrels did not mix to well in 2 inches of water when my place flooded.

I saw your post as you wait on an incoming PC. Don't know if this would help you or not, but I thought I would run it by you.

You are aware that you can boot any PC that has wired LAN on its motherboard needing only RAM, right? You only need to set up a 0% server on an existing PC and any machine on your LAN will boot.
  • Server
    • PET setup only requirement from PPM for some
    • No impact
    • All other PC services on the PC are never impacted
    • PC can be a laptop/desktop/etc.
    Booting PC(s)
    • Nothing to setup
    • NO peripherals needed, at all, on the booting PC.
    • Tell PC to use its LAN to boot
    • All normal PUP services on the newly booted PUP
    • No LAN impact except for the boot process.
Found here. Post any results, issues, or needs on that thread.
