How to boot from cf card in ide adapter?

#1 Post by G8PSZ »

Hi, I am trying to get puppy to boot from a cf card on an ide adapter, I installed to the flash via a pcmcia adaptor with the pup install feature.
the files on the flash are as follows as read as a secondary ide drive

IDEFLASH
initrd.gz
ldlinux.sys
pup_211.sfs
syslinux.cfg
vmlinuz

however I get a 'no os installed' error when the flash drive is in the primary position.
The pc is a thinkpad 570 with p2 366 & 128mb , & as I inferred earlier I know the cf ide adapter is working as I can see it as a secondary hd in the above machine.

I have a feeling I am missing something fairly obvious !

Have you tried to install any other operating system on the CF card like DOS? Sometimes there are BIOS issues that just don't allow the boot operating system to be recognized. I use a floppy to boot up into a flash drive. It is inconvenient but always works.

G8PSZ,
I can't say for sure, but this may be a possibility.
Is there maybe a jumper on the cf adapter for master slave setting?
This could (maybe) account for the problem of the drive being seen as secondary.
Also, did you install grub to the flashcard for bootloader?
