#1 Post by Lobster »

Just downloaded Open Office with Pupget in Puppy 1.0.4 ;)
It appears on the menu but does not open Open Office WP, Spreadsheet etc
(I tried rebooting) and I am using a fresh install . . .

How are others getting on?

Lobster,
If you are installing OpenOffice via PupGet, there is a warning in the first PupGet window that you first have to increase the size of pup001, by 256M.

...I do need to work out a better way of doing this, but currently PupGet expands the OpenOffice tarball, then copies it to the destination, so about 300M temporary free space is needed, 150M for the final installation.

Chubby on the other hand has a compressed OpenOffice, which only occupies about 43M.

Earl,
I'm glad OpenOffice printing works!
...I never got around to testing that.

I had this huge list of things to test, but many things got forgotten.
Didn't want to bother with a pre-release of 1.0.4 ...seems that the dice have landed the right way up!

Thanks Barry :)

Tee hee - the irony is I am not really a OO user - yes indeed I did install OO on 1.0.3 but this message coming up - I never saw

I also tried to install from bare bones

Dillo is very fast - yosa! {not sure what that means]- but too basic for my refined (ahem . . .) tastes

I am stil trying to download chubby Puppy but the whole pack seems there as I can not get there :(

gonna have another go with the standard 1.0.4

- at least I know what what is wrong - I was pulling out my whiskers . . .

Incidentally have you got your Ubuntu yet? There is an ubuntu lite project developing . . .

. . . and what is the interesting idea you have had?

I must say GNUmetric seems excellent

The reason I want Office is for the drawing package which is more intuitive as a structured package (for me) than sodi podi

Anyway looking forward to others experiences - oh one last thing before I swim off, distrowatch is declaring Barebones to be 63meg and not 39meg - not sure who to email . . .

Hooray! - seems to be installed now . . .

but it tells me I have to install a dependency called libpkgchk645li.so
do I? - how do I?

:)

Barry, I am amazed you got Chubby Puppy Open Office compressed to only 43 MB. Just curious, what was the MB before compression?
The reason I am interested, when I download Sunbird Calendar it was a little over 8MB. Any Idea how much it would compress down to?

Lobster, I download both version of the ubuntu lite versions. Both would only install a full version to HD and I didn't really want to waste my time on it, especially since Puppy was about to update.
From the few minutes I had to spend with Puppy 1.0.4 last night, It looks like I have found my Linux home.

Thanks for the Ubuntu info

For most people OO will be what they require for most of what they do. It runs fast with Puppy. Puppy Linux has been my preferred Linux and the ONLY Linux I prefer to Windows.
OO on the whole can just be used. In version 2 which I have tried in beta an easy and usable database is introduced. In this version the spreadsheet has data sorting.
My feeling is that the forum sometimes gives the impression that Puppy is full of problems. In fact it is often the solution to details of usage or inexperienced Linux users. It is clear to me that Linux is best learnt by using it (which with Puppy is possible)

:)

Recently read this interview with Barry
http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS9892123360.html

To me Puppy shows how the haphazard evolvement somehow seem to create an order and working structure that does work and well. Fun and frisky.
