DVD --> divx?

I would like to use Puppy Linux to create divx files from my DVD collection. To say it another way, I want to rip a DVD movie from DVD and convert / compress to a ~700MB divx (or other format) file to save on my HDD. I'm finding some information about copying DVD to DVD but nothing to go from DVD to 700MB divx file. Having been using Winblows to accomplish this goal, I have no idea how to do this in Linux. Could someone please suggest program(s) for Puppy Linux that will accomplish this goal for me? Maybe offer some links for further reading on the subject in Linux?
